Styrofoam – Couches in Alleys (feat. Ben Gibbard) Lyrics 16 years ago
Ben Gibbard is addressing this to the late author Jack Kerouac.
I believe this song is about spending your whole life in the single minded pursuit of a dream, then at the end of it all, you realize you've given up the things that would have made it all matter.
"the end of this road that climbs the horizon" = the path to the realization of that dream
"the walls and the fences will grow higher than redwood trees" = the defenses surrounding himself and potential significant others, will be too high to be broken down by the time he's succeeded.
"I felt like your mirror with the wind whipping through my hair" = implying he's on the same path as jack.
"I realized I hadn't gone anywhere." = he obtained his dream, but he missed what was really important
"With the problems I'd left like couches in alleys, that no one would ever claim." = clever metaphor for leaving behind his relationships with others (lyrics were wrong above).
"And the hardest part was sifting through the pieces of the rain soaked and rotten remains when I got home." = at the end of it all, he comes home wanting to be close to someone but nothing is left but broken relationships
