This song is about a break-up between the artist and a (perhaps) long time boyfriend. "I had a way then losing it all on my own," This line indicates that she had her 'way,' which I speculate to be kind of a player with guys, but now she has lost it due to falling for this guy. "I had a heart then but the Queen has been overthrown," She used to be the 'Queen of Hearts' playing with guys, however (as she says) the Queen as been overthrown by this guy who she actually cared about. "And I'm not sleeping now the dark is too hard to beat, And I'm not keeping now the strength I need to push me." Refers to the pain of a breakup. "You show the lights that stop me turn to stone, You shine It when I'm alone," 'Lights' may be a metaphor for happy memories they have together, and when she thinks about them and the breakup, they upset her and make it hard for her to continue trying to live her life without him. Adding to the pain of these memories, she mainly thinks about them when she is alone, making her feel that much more distant from the life she had before she met him. "And dreaming when they're gone." Represents her hope that once the memories of him fade, she will be able to have a normal life again. "'Cause they're calling, calling, calling me home," The memories she has of him makes her want him back (makes her want to go home to him) |

I agree with a few of the people on this board who say that this song fronts happiness but actually carries are darker undertone through the lyrics. This Song tells the story of a guy who is climbing a mountain and falls and is injured very badly. As he is going in and out of conciousness, he falls into a coma "in hospital parking lots" and awakes in a dream-like world. After the first 2 lines or so all he talks about is being non human things, because he is imagining being them. The sleeping pill portion of this song refers to the anesthetics that are being used as they operate on him. Notice that the line immediately following is talking about a "cold" seahorse because people become cold as they begin to die. As was stated previously on this board, lighthouses dont shine red and blue lights, but ambulences do. The speaker is in his dreamlike state, but also beginning to associate real life happenings such as the accident. To that end, he mixes the lighthouse with the ambulence lights that he may have scene as he was being tended to on the mountain or at the hospital. Another example of this is in the repetition of the lines "Hello Seattle, I am a mountaineer/In the hills and highlands/I fall asleep in hospital parking lots" The line about taking heed from everyone refers to the fact that he is an ER patient and everyone is paying attention to him to try and keep him alive. The next stanza refers to him dying and his soul rising over seattle and him getting to see it for the last time. In support of all of these assertions about the coma/injured person, listen to the drum beat of the song and think of it as the heart beat of the patient. As the song progresses, his heartbeat becomes crazier, faster, and much more spiratic. In fact, at one point (Take me above...) the drum beat (his heart beat) stops completely, and starts again only after a symbol crash (electric paddles used to start hearts anyone?). Finally at the end of the song, the drum beat stops for good signifying the death of the mountaineer. I know this may be a bit of an over analysis. Whatever. Take it or leave it, but this is what i get out of the song. |

| Wow I completely agree. Everyone thinks I'm crazy because i think all of these songs jsut front a happy vibe, but hold a sad or depressing deeper meaning in the lyrics. | |

wow i don't understand the users of this forum...about 7/8 of the comments say, "OMG YAYAY I LOVE THIS SONG I HAVE A BAD LIFE BLAH BLAH BLAH YAYAY (INSERT ARTIST)" that said, I'm actually going to analyze the the song. If you read the lyrics, only the very first memory the singer talks about is an activity that an adult would partake in (parachuting), the rest are things that are very childish such as "fighting shadows back" at the speaker's friend's mom's house (that was a mouthful). This can be interpreted to mean that during parachuting with an obviously broken parachute, the speaker got hurt and fell unconscious. As the speaker is unconscious, he begins having memories of him and his friend in their youth. The last line of the first verse is a memory that triggers his yearning as a child to go in the hot air balloon, because when they found it they weren't allowed to use it, as they were children. I also believe that the speaker's friend is a doctor. The chorus reflects that the speaker is unconscious "I'll be out of my mind," and that his doctor friend who is trying to resuscitate him is failing "you'll be out of ideas [to revive him] pretty soon." Also it expresses the speaker's desire for him (the speaker's friend) to stop wasting time trying to revive him and just be his friend for his last moments alive. *note* the cold in "the afternoon in a COLD hot air balloon" represents death (people are cold when they die) and that the hot air balloon will take his spirit away. "leave your jacket behind" again, the speaker wants his friend to leave his doctors jacket behind and just be his friend while he is still alive. the last line of the chorus "to kiss the ground where ever we touch back down" shows the speaker's acceptance of death and the afterlife (where ever he ends up) I'm sure the second verse adds to what i have in some way but that's all i got for now. I know it is a bit of an over analysis but who cares. Great song tho! |
