Simply put - this song is about a relationship slowly coming to an end. Both people in the relationship know the relationship is ending but they still cant let go of each other even though they know things are coming to an end. The "slow dancing in a burning room" is symbolic of how both people in the relationship know they need to get out of their relationship but are waiting as long as possible to do that because its hard for them to leave each other so they keep coming back to each other again and again. They both know the relationship isnt working but still havnet learned "Don't you think we oughta know by now? Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?" From personal experience people can love each other and things can just not be working in a relationship causing it to end. This is one of the best break up songs ever. It shows how truly amazing and genius John's song writing is. |

| I saw Jason perform this song this past weekend in New Jersey. He opened with this song acoustic and instantly the words captivated me because the song is so easy to relate to. To me this song is about how a person sees good things happening to the people around them but feel these good things are not happening to them whether its in love, luck, career or just overall happiness. "Somehow the sun shines upon you while i struggle to get mine" - I related this verse to happiness and how it seems so easy for some people to be happy and so hard for others to feel the same way although everyone has the ability to be happy. I think this song also relates to being lonely and waiting for the right person to come along which he finds in the end of the song. The Ray of Sunshine seems to be symbolic of falling in love, finding someone. Such powerful lyrics. | |
