Definitely agree that its a real gem of a song I think its about organised religion and how following a structured belief system can be frustrating. It sounds like he is criticising those who preach because it sounds good but their words dont have real meaning. Thats why there are so many questions in the chorus, he's questioning what it all truly means. I think this is also the case in the verse that begins "Its the thought that counts". This verse praises those who have the best intentions in life, but for whatever reason may not live them out properly. While some religions condemn these people as sinful, this song says that its what you meant and felt that counts throughout life that matters in the end. He also says that he'll pray for people til hes blue meaning that just because he isnt very religious, doesnt mean he doesnt care very deeply, which is what matters in the end. He wants to follow his own beliefs and feelings, rather than an organised religion, a nod to this i feel is in the 1st line "In pastures blue and green/I'll follow you and you'll follow me". It reminds me of bible stories about being led into green pastures but finding your own way there. probably read way too much into this peace |
