Many people keep saying it was John flinging out random lyrics to confuse schools, to confuse people, to test his creative boundaries, to see if it would sell... etc. But some of you clearly forget what kind of artist John Lennon was... If you would asked him why the grass was green he would say "No it's purple" just because you wont try to figure it out yourself. His music was a part of him, if no one took the time to try to understand it, then they don't deserve to understand it at all. If you sit here and tell the child "No it's hot don't touch it" (I am sorry for using a cliche as an example) the child will doubt it and probably learn the hard way, but I bet you that child will remember not to touch the stove again... Same thing with his music. If he tells you what that song means to him, then it's out! You wont learn you'd probably sit there shake your head and say "Oh I get it now" but you really wouldn't. Words are just words, letters forming sounds that represent things. You can hear someone talk without understanding/feeling. To truly understand is to reach for the feelings/lessons/motivation behind the words.
PS sorry for posting this twice, I'm somewhat new to this forum... Er... I accidently posted this as a reply to someone's comment... Sorry all! |

Yeah there is... I think it's only a local book for southern California... but it's called Billy Shears: The Secret History of the Beatles (Hardcover), unfortunately it's out of print so on Amazon it's gonna cost an arm, leg, and your head to pay for it... it's by a guy who calls himself Doctor Lev. It's his idea to what happened behind the lies (er... actually... truths in the book hah) he claims he's studied on it for YEARS and so it's pretty accurate. I don't know what to tell you though... there's a few websites that I used to visit that has all the clues listed... but I forgot. Sorry I can't be of much help xD |

I know this is an old post but whatever.
What I take out of the song is about a relationship gone bad. This song really hits home with me, it reminds me of exactly what's going on in my relationship now. I also thought a bit about Head and how he left the band... it could be partially that? Songs can always have double meanings no?
Back to the relationship theory:
A good relationship, close and loving... then a distance, he/she may have pulled back from the relationship, put a distance between the two, him trying to reach her but she's always saying "No".
Him leaving is obviously through suicide. "What am I now?" Is like asking her what is he to her now that he's gone? Does she love him now after he's taking his own life?
I don't know. I still love this song. |

I really agree with you. The fact when she says that the land lord will paint over their story, I think that it means with time their time together will be covered or forgotten. And when she says in our shadows we grew less and less tall... with each and every mistake they made they created each other to be smaller than who they really were. The worst of themselves, always putting each other down. |
