Thanks for providing such a personal and interesting take on the song. As you point out, he's clearly not talking to an ED, but the lines are eerily resonant with the subject. Especially this part: If I let myself be swept away to sea I would cry out to tell you But you’d not be there I would cry out to tell you But you wouldn’t care I hope you're doing better since your post. |

| It seems clear to me that the "five words" are "all I want is you". Any other ideas? | |

| That's what I thought too, but then it seems weird that she says "could never tell you what happened"...unless the person she's directing the song toward is not her rapist, but another unsavory dude. | |
| The All-American Rejects – Sierra's Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I feel like this song wants to be really romantic, but it has some lines that undercut that intended effect. The whole song gives the impression that the speaker is just saying whatever it takes to get this girl (Sierra) to sleep with him. For example, "I'll be the man you complete tonight" places emphasis on the immediate future, rather than on a lasting romance. It also suggests that she'll move on to other men after tonight. And the phrase "you belong to me" is always a bit creeptastic. | |

| Well, what happened the day she turned seventeen? It seems like it must involve the guy she's directing the song toward, but then why can't she tell him about it? Someone please deliver an answer to me, promptly. | |

| This song definitely speaks to the wild inner lives of writers. Just seeing someone who looks vaguely interesting can inspire scenarios like this, played out in vivid detail...but usually not spoken aloud. | |

| I just have to chime in and support the line "And I'm sleeping alone, in a house I don't own" as well. The slight strain in his voice in the words "sleeping" and "house" get me every time. And the simple sentiment of the line is so recognizable and quietly painful. | |

| This song is undeniably sexy. But I can't decide if the speaker is an attractively persistent suitor or a predatory creep. Regardless, the line "If someone would cover for me, we'll make it happen 'fore the end of this bridge...cover for me!" only gets more charming with every listen. | |
