LaToya's his "baby"? huh.
the vegetable part is really funny, but I think it's relevant too since the press feeds off of his life, but I don't know why he chose a vegetable to symbolize that. at first I wondered if he was referring to someone in a coma, how they're referred to as a human vegetable--lmao. |

wow, I didn't realize how personal this song really gets. the only part I ever heard was the "Demerol, Demerol" bit when CNN played it on Larry King Live, and I thought it was a fake. |

candizfitinyomouth, you just made me feel a lot less creepy, lol.
this song isn't necessarily my favorite of his, but it's absolutely the most beautiful song he's ever written. |

I think it's just his longing to live a normal life. I'm almost positive the city he's referring to is NYC, ("city winks a sleepless eye"; "if this town is just an apple") but I don't think there's a particular girl he's talking about, probably just someone who caught his eye on the street, but he can't go after her because that's impossible with his celebrity status. He wants to admire the city's lights like everyone else, with whatever girl he wants, and witness is first hand without being branded as an oddball. simply, it's just human nature.
aha wow that came out corny. |

aw, I really wish I hadn't read Allison9481's comment, I always liked to think of it as more of a romantic song. It's still perfect, probably one of my favorites. |

I don't think "beatin' it" was even used to refer to masturbation yet when this song was written. i don't agree with anyone claiming it's about masturbation or spousal abuse, but I do think it's really funny to think of it from that perspective, lol.
DEFINETLY not about child molestation.
the music video sort of explains it all to me, it's about the pressure on young men to prove themselves by standing and fighting vs. the logical and probably smarter option of running for their lives. the youth getting drawn into the world of gang violence was and still is a popular issue in america, and Michael confronted it with this song. It's also loosely based on West Side Story, he said so himself. & I agree with the posiblity of 'Beat It' representing some kind of personal crisis with his identity.
it's a work of art, either way, rip mj xo.

I expected more than just one comment on this, considering it's a classic from his first solo record. well I'm not gonna get too into since I have no one to really discuss it with, lol, but here's a shot in the dark: she's making him work all night so she can have an excuse to see somebody else? & clearly, he's not happy about it. |

DRMFreeZone, though you've made what's probably the most logical point I've yet to read here, I have to disagree. I always thought the song was more about regret, and from what I've read in one of his less popular biographies, (Margo Jefferson on Michael Jackson, if anyone's interested) I'm almost positive that it is. The referense to his mother's warnings of "be careful what you do, because a lie become the truth" isn't so much of an excuse as it is him regretting not listening to her. The song is about scandal, admitting to his mistakes, the possiblity of fathering a child while still being a child himself, the fact that the child isn't his is just luck on his behalf. I absolutely agree with the injustice of blaming her promiscuity while ignoring the shame of using a woman for sex, though. |
