Revised version of the lyrics from http://www.sadreminders.com/interaction/viewtopic.php?id=2378 : Scattered relics of your loves Lying round your dusty bones Bearing old souls, opening old scars Dissonant wallow of guitars Burning off Indian sun On the water barges hum Through the bay window panes Colors magnify and glaze Sleepy poets, perfect dream Pass our homes along the sea This I would, this I will Leave to join you in the hills For you I would, for you I will Leave this for the auburn hills Find your old peeling house Find you out there Hear the outcall from the tree Smell the midnight forest breathe Shield you from the stalking night Wake you in the morning --- You came to me, in a dream Waking down the path by the cold icy stream The white of the snow coating the pines In the sierra wintertime You disappeared, you left me alone In the old master-room of my mountain home And I called for you so many times And long for one more day with you in my life I long for one more day with you in my life I see you there in my dreams Your poise is perfect, that of a statuesque queen Your beautiful hair, your ocean blue eyes That bear the depths of your losses inside And I begged of you so many times To forgive me once and for all, for all of my lies To forgive me once and for all, for all of my lies --- Oh, Miami The leaning tree Like a dying hand As we pass The long dead grass Thirsty in the sun Memories rest Beyond the broken fence Let their spirits be The birds have left Their mother's nest On the rose's thorns There they sway Over the bleach white grey Sprawled over the hill |

I like to think of this as the story of Canadian settlers coming in from Europe in the early days. They left behind poverty in hunger-stricken Ireland for a dream of opportunity in the new world, but what they found was hard work and a harsh climate. While they ultimately made better lives for themselves, it was not at all the dream they had seeked. For as long as they lived, they could never stop longing for their old countries. It's easy to relate to this for any of us who have had dreams of leaving our dull lives behind, and just going away. We dream of it for ages, and when we finally can go, it's so much less than what we expected. So much so that we even miss home - it wasn't perfect but at least everything wasn't strange. Our dreams, as it were, get buried in snow. On a higher level, "This Is Not Like Home" is about the fundamental impedance between our desires and reality, when it hits. We're never quite content with what we have; we are always haunted by secret desires, but if we finally get them, it's a sad anti-climax until the next dream builds. And so we are trapped forever by desire. Stranded and free. |

I'm in doubt over the title; what's your source for "Southern"? I have had a theory that it is connected to Peter Gabriel. His album "So" has the wonderful song "Red Rain". Coincidence? For more evidence, check out the "Time After Time Etc" live performance of "Time After Time" which is also on the Reckoning album alongside "So. Central Rain". It has low-key passages from both "So. Central Rain" *and* "Red Rain". So that's an analysis I've felt awfully proud of, until I realized Reckoning was released in 1984 and So was released two years later, in '86. So I'm not sure if it breaks down at that point. But then again, who abbreviates "Southern" as "So."? |

You got one of the most beautiful passages wrong: "I left Bilbao, went to Madrid, to Barcelona, to Pamplona, where every ghost unto me known haunted me." http://www.blueguitar.info/lyrics/Tonight%20In%20Bilbao.txt has more or less accurate lyrics. Seems to be about a European tour Mark went on, but he left someone dear to him home in the US, and everywhere he goes he misses her. My favorite song from April. Reminds me a lot about railing around Europe. Perhaps next time I'll copy his route :-) |
