Handsome Furs – Dead + Rural Lyrics 16 years ago
There's just so much about this song that makes sense when I have the lyrics laid out like this. I grew up near where Dan grew up, so just getting out of high school I definitely can relate to what he's saying in this song. It's about leaving the dead end town you grew up in, and it didn't treat you very well so you're not sad to leave. Moving to somewhere or some idea of something that is supposed to be better than what you left behind, but considering the rest of the album's imagery about big cities and decadence and all that, living in the big city is not much better than the place that you left. The second stanza, the line "wheels just spinning in the ground" is an incredible line, on the surface, I liken it to the trucks that everyone drives during high school in rural communities, and they spin in the ground on the back roads. It also stands for the friends the narrator has, who are just spinning around in a circle, "doing the same old shit they've always done," to quote zaius above. I believe the last line that repeats is actually, "living in a city is drop and roll" or something, I know the word "city" is in there, kind of bringing together the fact that after having a shitty childhood in somewhere where nobody wants you and not able to wait to get the hell out of that town, the big city is just as bad, if not worse.
