The Antlers – Two Lyrics 14 years ago
I think AliveInNightmares got it. While she could have suffered from a personality disorder in addition to the cancer, it's possible that the two voices she's hearing as well as the two voices she's speaking could all be a conflicting love for the narrator and her desire to take her frustrations out on him. I guess it could also be a bipolar thing (happy/hopeful one day, depressed/angry the next). I'm not sure who the two people are blaming him, but at least one of them is likely her angry (or most angry) half.

As for the other issues, he may not be an employee of the hospice care facility, but the narrator clearly has some medical training. It was stated pretty clearly in Kettering that they met when he was treating her. However, given that the Kettering cancer center is apparently in New York (so someone says, but I haven't verified that) and that by this song they're dealing with earthquakes, they likely moved to a more seismically active location. Hey, maybe one of her parents blames him for taking her far away! ^_^ Anyway, he's looking at it from the point of view of someone in the medical field (nurse?), but he doesn't actually work there... or so it seems!

The Antlers – Atrophy Lyrics 14 years ago
Uh huh. Well, be team yanksfan if you want, but it doesn't make sense. Despite the storyline leading up to this song (i.e. seen through the eyes of the patient's lover), it would make some sense if the narrator in this is the patient's body. Still, for every bit that makes sense for this being the patient's body, it makes just as much sense for being the patient's lover. Furthermore, there are bits that don't make sense for this being the patient's body, e.g. "I'd happily take all those bullets inside you and put them inside of myself." Now, why would the patient's body gladly take the sickness from the patient... to put it back in the patient? Hmm...

Mew – An Envoy To The Open Fields Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this mostly makes sense. But everything from "Assigned to ascertain..." to "Collide with Me" just confuses me. Oh well! This is definitely the best Mew song, so it's very enjoyable whether or not it makes sense!

The Rural Alberta Advantage – The Air Lyrics 16 years ago
Definitely "harmful tonight."

As for the meaning, I'd guess that it starts out being about the person in the song wanting to escape the big city to their lover who is elsewhere. Although, this first verse may be meant to be more figurative, as in escaping the normal routine to someone better. Either way, it ends with the person in the song suggesting they end what's going off. Taking the latter interpretation of the first verse, this song would be about the course of a fleeting relationship.

The Rural Alberta Advantage – Drain the Blood Lyrics 16 years ago
Unless they meant for this to be some sci-fi song about vampires or murder... I'm guessing the "left ventricle..." part(s) are meant to say that his body has gone numb (the left ventricle carries blood to the body); I also think the "...petrified wood" parts that follow are meant to say that his heart would figuratively turn old and stone-like.

But, overall, I think this is a song is about a person that's fallen for and who wants to save a troubled person. The person in the song yearns to be let into their love interest's heart, despite their love interest's warning that they'd just end up cause the person hurt. The person in the song wants to help them, but, at the same time, they also want to make it through the dark time in their relationship.

I also think there are other possible interpretations, of course and it'd be interesting to hear other theories! This is a great song--the best on Hometowns, if not for "Frank, AB"!

The Rural Alberta Advantage – The Ballad of the RAA Lyrics 16 years ago
This definitely is a moving away from home song. I think the message is that you always take a part of your "home" with you, wherever you go. Of course, it would make much more sense if the lyrics were correct: the third (and 9th) line is "since THEY never moved an inch," which I take it means that the part of the prairie they have with them is only in their heart, since the prairies are physically still in AB.

The Rural Alberta Advantage – Frank, AB Lyrics 16 years ago
Some of the lyrics up there are wrong, but I'm pretty sure that "save you from this life" is right. Then, if you consider this being about the slide and the rest of the lyrics, the song seems more like a "I love you so much that I'd follow you into death" kind of song. "Save you from this slide" doesn't really fit contextually in that case. Still, "save you from this life" doesn't make much sense unless Frank, Alberta in 1903 (the year of the landslide) was a place you'd want saving from...

Anyways, it's simply a gorgeous song! Favorite from Hometowns!
