Then why don't you correct them?

Nice idea, but as you know, everyone calls HWY 10 and HWY 2 "the 10 and the 2". when people refer to had placement it's always followed by "o'clock". Is it coincidence that you need the 10 or the 2 to get to where some of his girlfriends have lived? Seems a pretty incredible coincidence.

FYI ... "the 10" and "the 2" are the two highways in LA you take to get to Hollywood blvd (the "boulevard"), where a number of the girls he's dated live or at least work.

Oops ... I now see what you mean by the 10 and 2 ... where you put your hands. Incidentally, people in LA (all my relatives live there) refer to HWY 10 and HWY 2 as "the 10" and "the 2", but whenever referring to hand placement it's always followed with the word "o'clock". The other is that JM said after breaking up with Simpson it had renewed meaning and added this last phrase. Guess where both Simpson and Hewitt live? Right ... you gotta take "the 10 and the 2" to get there.

Actually ... time to head on over to mapquest ... HWY 10 and HWY 2 are the two highways that you need to get on to go to Hollywood Blvd, although your interpretation is convenient it doesn't really follow. "Taking a right" (his words) would only be the 2 o'clock direction on the steering wheel, not the 10, and even then you turn the steering wheel a lot further than 2 o'clock than to turn right. Nice idea though ... I'm always fascinated by how deep insights people can get from lyrics that the originator never anticipated.

John Mayer – Something's Missing (Alternate Lyrics) Lyrics 16 years ago
I get the impression that this is one of those revealing songs ... not just a hypothetical situation and can provide a real glimpse into JM. I have my own idea what it means.

I realize this idea may be unpopular (although I don't know how or why it's become that way in society today), but the song mentions he is lonely for somebody, but he has all the friends in the world (and in fact I'm sure he does - who couldn't love JM) so who could that be ... all you're left with is the one individual who is not of this world. I mean JM mentions all the things people typically have in order to feel fulfilled, except for one major thing: religion. There's a investigative method where you make a list of typical causes and cross off the one's you've tested ... and yet religion is the one thing he seems to have left off his list to start with.

Why that is is intriguing ... maybe because he's been so frankly face to face with his own mortality, such an experience tends to have a polarizing effect, and he's likely surrounded by a crowd who fairly treat this subject with contempt, perhaps it's only natural that he not consider the one thing most likely missing from his life and most likely to make one feel lonely.
