I definitely see betrayal here. I think the line "I put you on that tree" is speaking metaphorically of crucifixion...this does not necessarily mean Jesus. I think he is comparing the pain of betrayal to the pain of crucifixion; tho as Judas betrayed Jesus, I can see how he could use that story to paint this picture. In the beginning of the song, it seems as if he resents his demons; they are following him, clinging to him. By the end of the song he is the one who is hanging on to his demons; because he cannot let go of his demons, he is letting go of his lover by the end of the song "and so your heart is free". I like fusillade's explanation of the contradictory nature of the song. Well put. (note: I believe the first line of the fourth paragraph is "My demons waltz with me" not "walks") |
