| I think that this song is about giving up. About letting other people win and just blending in | |

I had to create an account just to write my song meaning about this song. The lyrics are incredibly powerful and I'm getting choked up just reading them because its so applicable to my life. I'm going to have to have my boyfriend listen to this song because I could never record my feelings so accurately as Justin has managed to do. The song is about truly being in love with someone. However, depression and feelings of self hatred are getting in the way. He knows that he should find a way to get himself together before he falls in love but its too late and he can't help himself. The one he loves already knows that he has emotional problems--he's an "open book"--but now he's trying to make her understand how he feels. Its one thing to talk about a mental illness as a medical problem and its an entirely different things to open yourself up and be vulnerable enough to let someone in to see the repercussions and how you feel. "I'm laughing with a broken face"-- this means to me faking happines, something that I've always done. You laugh but in your eyes something is broken revealing that your not truly happy. "But in my head... There's some shelves that need cleaning, from basement to ceiling, control"-- he needs to find control over his own mind, something you can only understand if you suffer a mental illness yourself. "There's a part of me seeking and desperately needing to open up That's strange 'cause I'm an open book, a confused boy"-- he wants her to understand what he feels and what its like. He knows its contradictory to say he's an open book that needs to open up but there's a difference between people knowing everything about you and someone truly understanding. "I've got this post dramatic thing I've got this tattoo of a ring that lies around my wedding finger and that's where I want to state this claim."--he's talking about Post dramatic stress disorder which causes intense emotional reactions to triggers. "Lies" in the second line has a double meaning. He saying the tattoo lies to himself about the stability of his heart but it is also on his ring finger which is where he wants to "state this claim" on her showing that he is serious about her and about giving himself up to her. "But when your saving is drying, you can't stop from crying you've got to suck it up. You're not her buttercup, you're not her favorite book"--this stanza shows his self confidence problems as well as all his other problems mentally and emotionally. The first 3 lines are self explanitory. The last 2 are saying that he isn't perfect and show that he finds it hard to trust her because of his own self hatred. This was really hard for me to write but I hope someone appreciates it. Its just what the song means to me, a girl who has depression, possibly bipolar II, cuts herself when times get tough, and is hopelessly in love with her boyfriend of 2 years. |
