Interpol – Leif Erikson Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow! Excellent response. Thank you for your posting it. I have always loved this song, and your post really helped me to understand it a lot better. I think you are exactly right about the guy in the song falling in love with a prostitute. It seems like throughout the song, the guy is trying to learn her way of being detatched, because when his emotions get involved, he cant help getting hurt or disappointed. He is trying to tell himself not to fall in love with her, and she is in fact trying to tell him the same thing.  She tells him that his sentimental side is his best side, and in turn that her sentimental side is what she lost by sleeping with so many men. She may indeed have feelings for him, but she is so numb by now that she cant go to him in any other way except in exchange for money. The guy tries to enjoy the sex and the intimacy, he has a good time, but by the end of the song, he cant help falling in love with her.
Brilliant song.

Iplaybeer, good point. Both people would have a mutual understanding even though they speak different languages.

Placebo – Speak in Tongues Lyrics 16 years ago
This is one of my favorite songs on the album, I have a few thought on it:

In response to Sylvie12,

The term "speak in tongues" is from the New Testament. It is when a person can speak their own language and be understood by someone who does not normally speak the same language. It would be considered a miracle, for example if I am speaking English and someone from Japan completely understands what I am saying even though they do not speak English.

(Note: If I am wrong, please don't quote any scriptures)

Still, other people say that "speaking in tongues" means that you are speaking complete nonsense that no one can understand.

But, I think that in this song, "speak in tongues" just means that the speaker of the songs desperately wants to be understood, and if he/she can be a better listener and communicator, then the possibilities are endless and "we can build a new tomorrow, today"

In response to hadar,

I think you are correct about the drag queen reference. this song could be about a man coming to terms with himself as a woman, and not letting people tell her she can't be who she really wants to be.

"Don't let them have their way
You're beautiful and so blasé
So please don't let them have their way
Don't fall back into the decay
There is no law we must obey"

PJ Harvey – April Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a great song. I love the lyrics. I think allviolet may be correct about the reference of April being the cruelest month. I think that April rain is representing a break up.

At the start the speaker was so careful to make the relationship work: (April...all that careful stepping, and now your rain.)

The speaker in the song is wondering how he or she could not have seen this coming, and wasn't ready for it when it happened (how could I have worn in-appropiate clothing).

The days, weeks and months after a break up can be disheartening (these days seem to crush me). The end of communication lines between ex-lovers (I don't know what silence means) also wears you down

The speaker feels like it is the end of the world and that the pain will be too much to bear (April what if I drown...your rain it overcomes me)

This song may be about something else entirely, but I do see a lot of pain in the lyrics. brilliant song.
