Note to nishidake. I edited your lyrics referencing the official lyrics on the E.R. website, but I didn't just stick to the official lyrics because it seems that the recording on the CD differs and I mostly agreed with what you seemed to be hearing. On the official lyrics the last words are "and dance, dance" However the way it is recorded does sound more like "days". I always thought I was hearing "bathe" because the idea of being bathed in starlight seemed in keeping with the sensibilities of the group who seem to hold to a somewhat magical worldview. |

I heard him interviewed by a newbee DJ on KPIG radio. Man I felt sorry for the DJ. McMurtry answered just about every question with no more than 2 or 3 words. That said, McMurtry is just about my favorite songwriter. |

Boy, the lyrics were so messed up. Says they were submitted by Songmeanings. Whoever submitted them probably never understood the song or English isn't their first language. Coat instead of colt. For heavens sake, it's referring to a horse, not a garment. That said, fantastic song. I hope the corrections I made are accepted. |

| Gillian Welch – My Morphine Lyrics

"War" is probably correct. Morphine was used as a battlefield painkiller during the Civil War and wounded soldiers were routinely sent home with a supply. It was easily available in drug stores and through the mail. It is estimated that following the civil war there were 400 to 500 thousand morphine addicts in the US.

| Natalie Merchant – King Of May Lyrics

It's definitely a eulogy to Alan Ginsberg. He was crowned "King of May" in Prague, Czechoslovakia for a May day celebration in 1965 and shortly afterwards expelled from the country when his sexual orientation came to the attention of the authorities.
The reference, "crazy mother's son" refers to his mother, Naomi, who suffered from a form of mental illness. |

I totally agree with you, there is something special about the way they do this song. The instrumentals are incredibly sweet and the backup harmonies are positively angelic. Frazey sings it with such an underlying joy in her voice, you can tell she loves the song as well. The whole presentation is infectious — it makes me high every time. |

Another confirmation of Patty's songwriting genius.
Have to agree with stevesomething about the faith interpretation, though it's only tragic if you believe that loss of faith in a divine being is always a bad thing. Sometimes re-examining your view of reality can bring you closer to inner peace.

People living in the south may not understand this. I grew up in Toronto where the change of seasons is clearly felt. The first time I heard this song it sent me right back to my childhood. For a few years, on the first warm day of spring, I would put on my sneakers, get on my bike and just cruise back and forth on the street in front of our house. It's hard to describe the feeling of energy that used to surge through my body, like liquid bliss. It was like the warm sun that I could feel above me was pulling it up from my feet to the top of my head - like a magnet. I used to wonder if the sun was God. I guess it kind of is. It was here before the earth and in a way, created us. |

This is such a touching song. I haven't been on either side of this situation and she still makes me cry. The last line suggests an image of a junkie's arm stretched out for the needle. It may not be intentional but it still is brilliant. |
