This is so beautiful... "So you lost your trust And you never should have But you never should have But don't break your back If you ever see this" I believe it's about someone with a bad history of relationships, and they deserve better, but it they've lost faith in the chance of a good relationship happening anyway. Then it's saying that people shouldn't bother making an effort to make the person feel better because it just won't work, or that there are better things they can do with their time. "But don't answer life In a bullet proof vest With the windows all closed I'll be doing my best I'll see you soon In a telescope lens And when all you want is friends I see you soon" It's about the person wanting space, but for others to make sure they seize any opportunity they can to be loved, even though the person themselves can't. They'll be there for their friends but they can't get to close for fear of being hurt. They just need their space, so they'll see them soon from "a telescope lens", or just keeping them at a distance. "So they came for you They came snapping at your heels They come snapping at your heels" When the friends do their best to get close, but the person keeps pushing them away, a fear or commitment to even a friendship maybe. | To me this song describes family life. Life with a domineering father, and a faltering family life. Him fearing that all his children will let him down, so he will not approve of them unless they do what he wants with their lives. You have a dream not matter how practical and yet he still doesn't approve of what you do. "Not asking for you permission, please understand." Having the courage to stand up to him even with fear of being disowned. "If it's all or nothing then let me go." Not giving in to oppression any further, refusing to give your all and it not getting appreciated, so cutting loose. Some song are just right for the right point in your life. | |

To me this song isn't about a relationship with others, its about the relationship with ones self. When i first heard it i was (and still am to an extent) severely depressed, and this song almost perfectly describes the inner turmoil of finding happiness and self worth... the lines that always gets me are: "I dive in at the deep end You become my best friend I wanna love you but I don�t know if I can I know something is broken and I'm trying to fix it Trying to repair it anyway I can" its like trying to convince yourself that you're going to get better, or trying as hard as you can to have some respect for yourself, and all the while knowing that all you have is you, and that no-one else will be able to help you... ok so its a pretty schizophrenic interpretation but thats what this song means to me, and the belting "oooooooohhhh, oooooooohh"'s are killer too... |
