Vampire Weekend – Giant Lyrics 15 years ago
Another rap reference: "Envy me" is in the hook from 50 Cent and the Game's song, "Hate It or Love It." There's probably other rap references in there too but I don't know them.

Marshall Crenshaw – Cynical Girl Lyrics 15 years ago
This might be my favorite Marshall Crenshaw song. The thing I love about the narrator in this song is that while he wants so badly to find a "cynical girl" who shares his hate for TV, etc., his longing for love shows he's not quite as cynical at he believes. When he finds her he'll be lost in love, having fun. All that.

Pixies – Cactus Lyrics 16 years ago
I recently heard a 1958 rockabilly song by Bill Allen that thematically reminds me very much of this song. It's called "Please Give Me Something." And though the narrator is likely after sex, not clothing, one interpretation is that he's heading off to serve a jail/prison term and is looking for something from his lady "so our love won't die." And the music is pretty similar to "Cactus" as well.

BILL ALLEN (IMPERIAL 5500, 1958)

Well, please give me something, to remember you by
Come on baby give me something, to remember you by
Just a little bit of something, so our love won't die

Say well, I'm going to my baby, tomorrow night
Say well, I'm going to my baby, tomorrow night
Well, we won't argue, and we won't fight

Aowh, please give me something, to remember you by
Come on baby give me something, to remember you by
Just a little bit of something, so our love won't die

Well, I'm going to my baby, tomorrow night
Say well, I'm going to my baby, tomorrow night
Well, we won't argue, and we won't fight

Aowh, please give me something, to remember you by
Come on baby give me something, to remember you by
Just a little bit of something, so our love won't die
Won't die, won't die, won't die, won't die
