When I first heard this song and read the lyrics, it instantly reminded me of the relationship I had with this girl. We were dating long distance, but at the end things didnt work out. I remember how hard I would try to make her smile, because I thought that was the only way I was going to be able to make her realize how happy she could be with me. The lyric "All kinds of dust are gonna keep me satisfied But only at your place" resorted me back to being at her house, how we would lay in bed, listen to music, talk, kiss, have sex, watch tv, cuddle, etc. I was happy being at her place, no matter what we ended up doing. "It's over. Why is it so hard to stay away?" After we ended things, I wanted to get her out of my mind, but there she was. I knew she was talking to other people already and it killed me inside. But once she would talk to me, I couldn't resist and would talk to her as well. I knew it was over, but I couldn't stay away. "Tonight is special I only memorize those things I deny And I forget why it'll sing Seize the day" This pertains to thinking back, trying to convince myself that I was over her, but I knew I really wasn't. I would be too occupied thinking about what went wrong and why I can't get over her that I wouldn't seize the day or move on with my life. "It would be no price to pay. We began this our way" I often would think about giving into what she wanted, of being able to date each other and others, but just because somehow maybe I was going to be able to show her how happy she would be with me and just me, but thankfully I never did give into that. I know it would have been worse in the long run. "Don't have to say that you'd love to But they'd be pleased that you want to. Someday" There were times I wanted to invite her to things my friends were having or just hang out, without making it seem like I was the only one that wanted her to go, although I was. Someday meaning it didn't have to mean now or later, just eventually I guess. Eventually she would be pleased to be with me again. That's just what I got from the song..Either way, its a Beautiful song. |

I agree with the interpretations that have been made, that it's about his gf cheating, or about an ex. But to me, it seems about an ex-bf still in love with his ex gf trying to convince her to get back with him again. In the first couple lines "Tell me your mine..Tell me your mine..To break the ice" it comes off as thats what he wants to hear, not so much as pleading, but just hoping. "Does he make you smile Does he fully embrace the way Does he leave you to the flames That you like Who is this guy" -- He is basically asking her questions about the new guy, seeing if she truly is happy with him. "This twee neophyte Does he know that I'll wait, for all time Does he make you right Does he say that he'd like to know you Does he say that he wants to know" --He is asking again 'Who the fuck is this guy, does he really mean it when he says he wants to get to know you more, does he make you happy? Does he know I'm still going to wait for all time?(That was stated indirectly to her really)' "Tell me you're fine Tell me it's hard to fake it time after time Who is this guy" " "All of the ways You will make it up Make it up for me..." I know the way you will make it up make it up for me.." --Right there in those last three stanzas is where it seemed to me that he was talking to himself, trying to convince himself that it is just a phase or so that she is going through. That at the end she is going to realize that she loves him. He tries to convince himself so hard although deep down inside he knows that it really might be over, she found someone new. Beautiful song, perfectly synchronizes with The Undoing and Try It On. |

| From personal experience and just hearing this song over and over again, it seems like the song could be about someone you were with, or had feelings for, and realizing they moved on with their lives, met someone new, and forgot about the past (in this case, me, you, whatever) then realizing that the step to move on probably wasn't the best move. "You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking" could be the person wanting to come back into your life, discreetly, as in cheating, or fucking the person they're with over and dissing them completely to be with you again. I don't know, thats what I think it means, especially since it does make sense with how its going in my life. Haha yup. | |
