Modest Mouse – Night on the Sun Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree on both counts.

Funny that bit about nihilism. It's kinda like Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life...:D

Interesting you mentioned flames there. This song was used in the movie 'Snatch' during a scene in which a gypsy/Traveller caravan is burned. That's where I heard it first. Such a contrasting song. The lyrics are almost dreamy, but the music is angry, thunderous at times.

I think that Isaac had an idea for a song, and he wrote it twice, but he liked them both too much so he recorded both. One was this, the other Float On. That's why they bleed into each other on the album.

Just my thoughts.

That's exactly how I've always seen this song.

Well, Peter is obviously St. Peter, and his monkey could just mean a dull-witted henchman, as seen in Hot Fuzz: "You and your monkey [Nick Frost]". Can't think of other examples now, but do you know what I mean?

I think it's Isaac saying 'I'll be damned' when he hears what the telephone guy has to say.

Also see 3rd Planet:
"The 3rd planet are sure that they're being watched,
By an eye in the sky that can't be stopped,
When you get to the promised land,
You're gonna shake the eye's hand"

and Styrofoam Boots:
"I'm in heaven tryin' to figure out which stack
They're gonna stuff us atheists into,
And, Peter and his monkey laugh,
And I laugh with them,
Not sure what at"

Yeah, I relate to that a lot as well. This song used to always keep me going after school, when I was feeling low. I'd walk out the door and have it already playing in my head, and it seemed to let the tension out.

Great song anyway.

I don't know why, but the first time I really heard this song (it was the live version from BVBRA, but I have since listened to the other version many times) I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. I dunno what about it was different, but after that I had to keep playing it again and again. I'm still listening to that live version at least once a day. I've got it on right now actually.

Although the original is usually the best, I think that possibly by the time this was recorded, much later, they had got the arrangement down perfectly and the song sounded much more studio than the studio version to me. Is that weird? :D

Anyway, brilliant song, potentially about all sorts of things, but we've heard every possible opinion, I won't bore you with my interpretation. :)

Modest Mouse – Spitting Venom Lyrics 16 years ago
This was my first coming-back song. I always have a couple of songs on an MM album that I really like at first, so for a while I listen only to them. But then by chance I hear something I like in another, previously ignored song, and I suddenly become obsessed with this new song. 'Spitting Venom' was the first of these. I loved it, a lot, and later it was there when I needed words to express my feelings during a personal crisis. I'll never forget it. It perfectly articulated my anger at being left out of the loop, in particular:
"I didn't know you kept track,
Didn't know there was a score"

and

"You can say what you want but don't act like you care,
Takes more than one person to decide what's fair"

This song is the reason I get annoyed when people say Modest Mouse are crap now. YouTubers, I'm looking at you. :/ This was my first MM album and I've worked my way backwards. Never have I seen any real, serious difference in musical quality between albums. Modest Mouse == Modest Mouse, as far as I'm concerned. It's a simple equation. :) Saying one album is crap 'cos it's not the same is like saying: 'Damn, Terry Pratchett is crap these days. Why doesn't he just rewrite his first ten books again and again?'. Nothing, especially people, and among people especially bands, lasts forever. We have to enjoy and celebrate every song we can get out of MM, 'cos we want to have as much as possible to pass on.

I agree. You can see it in 'Doin' The Cockroach': all the bits about people all being the same really ("This one's a doctor, / This one's a lawyer, / This one's a cash thief, / Takin' your money") even though Western civilization emphasises the you, the individual, the 'I'm special - you all suck' mentality. Am I making sense? :D

And in 'Trailer Trash', too. He says "I shout that you're all fake", and I'm not sure he's just talking about people's "bellyaches", I think he's referring to society at large.

Modest Mouse – Whenever I Breathe Out, You Breathe In (Positive/Negative) Lyrics 16 years ago
Yes, exactly. The feeling that someone out there, namely a poet with his own rock band, has felt how you feel and has articulated that feeling in a catchy and moving way.

It's great. It's like having a really good friend who'll shout at all the people who did crappy things to you (see 'Black Cadillacs') and then you don't need to. :)

When he says he "didn't feel anything at all", that is in fact depression. The word 'depressed' and the clinical term 'depression' are quite different. 'Depressed' means to feel sad about something, normally it means a severe sadness, but clinical depression is best described as an absence of feeling, according to sufferer J.K. Rowling.

Also, I love the "Positive, negative, positive, negative..." bit in the song. I never see it in lyrics either (@sour2ratekiss) so I guess some people just don't listen. :D As far as I can hear it goes

" positive, negative, positive negative,
I believe, there's positive, negative, positive, negative,
The seasons, are positive, negative, positive negative..."

Not sure about the first one. Very difficult to hear. Dunno how many times I've listened to that song trying to get that bit.
