Jars of Clay – Good Monsters Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm very surprised there are so few comments. This song struck me in a very unusual way the first time I heard it. It's obvious to me that this song is an indictment against christians in this country. We are the good monsters, for sure, bored and in love with ourselves. But this song has a prophetic element too, I believe. Just look at the first line. "All the good monsters open their eyes to see the wasteland where the homefires rise and the people shouted why, why, why?" This brings the 911 terror attacks to mind, and may suggest a coming day of judgment. The second verse backs up this notion, about the "giants" (clearly evil), coming awake. Yet, most christians do not understand God's righteous judgement and it leaves them speechless. "All the bright eyes turn away, as if there wasn't anything to say about the justice and the mystery." Quite sobering.

Switchfoot – Politicians Lyrics 16 years ago
More than ever, this song really speaks of the condition of this country. "Everything is broken," and faded. We truly are pledging allegience to a country without borders. Our borders are not well protected, leaving us wide open for attack. Hence, "watching for our skies to be torn apart." Very sobering message, almost prophetic.

Switchfoot – The Fatal Wound Lyrics 16 years ago
If Jon explained that he wrote this song in reference to Christ's crucifixion, then I'm sure that is the best interpretation. It is a graphic description of what kind of agony Jesus must have faced. However, I believe there is more to the song than that. The words seem very personal. It speaks of the real prospect of martyrdom for Christians -- "no rubber bullets now"-- to follow Christ's example. "Let's go down together with the fatal wound." The song struck me, the first time I heard it, as being almost prophetic. A stretch perhaps.
