I think it's about loving someone wild and impulsive -- one of those people who's in love with the world, who appreciates everybody and everything and finds beauty in the simplest of things -- with all of your being. But you know you can't be with them. It's about feeling lonely and isolated without someone.

Robert Smith said in an interview that it was based on stories his uncle told him and his siblings when he was a child. The Spiderman was a recurring character in the stories he told, and it was Robert's favorite. His uncle "crossed that unspoken line" one time by scaring Robert while he was in bed, coming through the window, pretending to be the Spiderman. Needless to say, he wasn't allowed to tell the stories anymore. |
