"I love that riff after he sings 'Sail by the talisman'" Sorry, I meant after 'golden promised land' and such... |

This song is absolutely amazing. It's up there with the very best Maiden tracks. And just listen to Brucie's wails - hasn't lost one bit of energy! I love that riff after he sings 'Sail by the talisman' - it just sounds like epic journey music. Perfect! Theme-wise, the most prominent one in the album concerns journeying away from home, homesickness etc. The journeys usually involve searching for fame/fortune etc, as in El Dorado. This one's similar to Ghost of the Navigator, but with the homesickness element. Up the Irons! |

I agree. He's messed himself up with drugs, with "fingers seek my veins" possibly referring to both where he will cut himself and drug abuse. The "net below" that "rot away" refers to the amount of chances he's had to redeem himself, but now he's reached the final straw. The "storm" is literally a storm and drug abuse. He plans to commit suicide ("to do"), and wants his loved one to forgive him, but not mourn him. My favourite part of the song is "I cry to the alleyway /Confess all to the rain" because it sounds cool and is the realisation point; he is beyond helping. I could go on for ages about this song... Such an underrated track. The acoustic version is class as well. |

The song is about the Danse Macabre, as someone stated above. It is a late-medieval allegory, depicting several skeletal figures dancing in a circle around Death incarnate. The figures are usually a king, an emperor, a young boy and a beautiful girl; all walks of life, no matter what you do or who you are, are united in death. Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, wrote a poem called "Tam O'Shanter", in which a man witnesses the Danse Macabre. Basically, the song is like that poem; a man is walking alone, minding his own business, when suddenly this supernatural event takes place before his very eyes, and he ends up escaping from it. Hope this clears it up for anyone who wasn't sure! |
