For as complex and lyrical as this song is, and as plainly apparent as the story is, I've often felt that there was an underlying theme of lives lost to the war--Viet Nam in this case. Many of us grew up at a time when young men had "ghosts in their eyes" and didn't know it. They went off in the prime of their lives never to return except in haunting memories of those left behind. The last verse especially to me says Mary knew many of these boys and their death in the war is what has made her so lonely. Listen to the song again from this perspective.
Born to Run is THE song from this artist--I think the greatest song ever recorded--but Thunder Road is the one that touches my heart the most. |

Again, I'm Alive is an unbelievably great album and, to me, has the most cohesive songs of all his work. In a career defined by public expressions of pain and lose this album tells the tale from beginning to end in a very sincere and haunting fashion.
Anyone who has ever loved and lost will recognize themselves in I'm Alive. |
