I’ve loved this song since it came out but I can now define the meaning two decades later. My wife of nearly 35 years works at a hospital north of Atlanta GA USA overrun with Covid, over half the patients they are now… She is there today on a Sunday since 4am on a 12 hour shift today like she has been since the start of the pandemic and I think this song is about women - and there are so many of them - just like her that really hold the world together. She is a just over 5 ft tall fucking badass warrior, not afraid of anything, or anyone, at least on the outside. Inside what’s really behind it is heart. That’s what this song is about, at least it is to me now. |

What I find amazing about truly great songs is that while they may have been written about one idea or event in particular, that they can be applied or offer a perspective on a multitude of events as time goes on. This song, written 16 years ago, is to me as current today as it may have been The day it was written. I feel it applies perfectly to embattled US President Trump. It speaks to both those who oppose him, about what he called the lies that were said of him, that were never really lies as so many like myself believe, and here he is admitting to that. Yet it also pledges his allegiance to those who follow him at the end, in my own strange way, my own sick way, I will always be true to you... So in that regard it speaks to those who believed in him and tries in someway to tell those people if they really were lies he was doing it for them and perhaps asking for forgiveness. I personally hope to see him out of office quickly but I can see that if I were a supporter I could also find meaning in this song. And that is what makes the lyrics in the song itself so truly astounding. It’s a timeless philosophical exploration that can provide comfort for whatever troubled Morrissey at the time and whatever troubles any of us now. I for one find comfort and hope in it now as we approach the end of a tumultuous 2020. |
