Can't believe nobody's commented yet. Definitely the single of the year, maybe the best single overall since Crazy. Cee-Lo's the man. Meaning is pretty self explanatory. |

| Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #2 (Laika) Lyrics

In the end of Into The Wild, Alexander dies from eating a poisonous plant, but not before realizing "happiness is only real when shared", which I think ties in with this song. Like Alexander, it doesn't seem that Alex in the song was ever happy alone (tears in a cup) and he quite possibly never came back (should have just named you laika). |

I basically agree with everyone else that this concerns an older brother he essentially rejects his own family to go out on his own adventures and completely isolate himself from his family. I think the Into the Wild and russian dog references are spot on too. However, the core of the song is really about unconditional love, and specifically the love and adoration a younger child has for his older sibling. Even though the older brother is completely rejecting his family, the younger one completely loves him and even roots him on. Also, (spoiler for Into The Wild below) |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Stagger Lee Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
There are various recordings and various spellings (stackolee, stagolee, stagger lee, stack a lee) of this song going back decades. With it's explicit lyrics, Nick Cave's version most closely resembles 'The Great Stack-a-Lee' by Snatch and The Poontangs (a band led by Johnny Otis), in 1969. The line "I'll crawl over fifty good pussies just to get one fat boy's asshole" is actually from another Snatch and The Poontangs song called 'Two-time Slim'.

| R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics

I think it is about unrequited love. Very generally speaking, he is trying to confess his love (choosing his confessions) and true feelings for someone; he keeps "setting it up", but he never goes all the way and has either said to much, or not enough. He always keeps an eye on the person he loves, watching to see any sort of reaction or similar feelings. He ultimately doesn't completely confess his love and convinces himself that any sort of similar effort he sees in the other person is just a dream. I think "losing my religion" represents the emotional impact this love has on him. His entire life and whatever is the center of it now will completely change if he pursues his love, and he is just not able to make the sacrifices and risks necessary to pursue true love. |

| Gnarls Barkley – Transformer Lyrics

It's about being able to "transform" and evolve as a person. He "was a robot"-just another gangster cliche who "sold rock" and "rode Pac", but now he's "someone else". Although, the transformation goes both ways. He can "transform without even trying", which implies he still sometimes reverts to old behaviors, and he also expresses doubts if he can really go between the two (I think I can, or can I?).

| Mos Def – Auditorium Lyrics

I think this song is about rapping/performing and the effect it has on the rappers and the audience. Mos Def is rapping about the way he feels when he raps; it seems like it is an almost involuntary reaction to the world he lives in. Slick Rick's verse is a story about how he is being prejudged but when he performs the audience loves and appreciates him. |

| Gnarls Barkley – She Knows Lyrics

He's reflecting on the death of his mother. Cee-Lo, like most all of us, was "living a lie" and his mother was trying to get to him and live life the right way. With the passing of his mother, he is now living the life his mom wanted and is "so much more". Essentially, this is because Cee-lo truly believes his mother is now always with him and is now essentially given a second life through him (what's one to sacrifice when you live more than twice). So, he is essentially possessed by the spirit of his mother (in a good way-like how we are told as kids when someome close dies that they are always with us and watching over us). So, even though he never lived life how his mother wanted him to when she was living, he knows that "she knows" he has now become the man she always wanted him to be. |

| MGMT – Love Always Remains Lyrics

I think this is about someone who is looking back at his past because he is dying. He is reminiscing about about past love; however, I don't think he is thinking about a specific relationship or woman (it's not specific). Rather, the song is more about love itself and the feeling of being. He was once in love and the feeling and memories of love last forever, even if the relationships don't. This love allows him to die in peace and without fear. The message of the song is summed up in the title: Love Always Remains. |

| Kanye West – Welcome to Heartbreak Lyrics

I think it's about the sacrifices in one's personal life and happiness that are made in order to chase fame, wealth, and major success. Kanye is looking back on his life, and while he achieved great success and accomplished many of his goals, he still regrets the price he had to pay and questions if it was really all worth it. It is presented as a warning to young rappers (personified by Cudi) or anyone else chasing greatness. Kid Cudi still possesses the fire and drive to be successful, which reminds Kanye of himself ("I've seen it before") and Kanye is warning Cudi that the lifestyle is not that great. Ultimately, though, Kanye never takes his own advice and can't stop pursuing success. In the last verse of the song, Kanye sings Cudi's chorus, showing that just like Cudi or a younger Kanye, he is still consumed with chasing greatness. |

| Drive-By Truckers – Sounds Better In the Song Lyrics

People change, which changes the dynamics of relationships. Both the boy and the girl used to be on the same plane- dreamers not ready to grow up. He was the more dominant force in the relationship and she pretty much adored him and went along with all of his dreams, but now she has matured and found her own voice while he is still the same dreamer/drifter he always was. So now she is leaving him behind to pursue her life. He still loves her and recognizes it is better for her to move on since he is still holding on to his youth and would just hold her back.
Just a beautiful song, probably my favorite by DBT. |
