| Isn't it about a woman who put her relationship ahead of everything esle and now she's married him and feels unfulfiled and like her life is stuck where it is? | |

yay, I'm the first to comment this is one my favourite songs on the album. it's about a relationship that's breaking down and he's probably having an affair(what's with all the late night liqor phone calls?) but she has some kind of secret too(a secret safe behind a pretty smile), possibly that she's also having an affair and that fact that it's hers and no one else's is making her feel better OR ALTERNATIVELY She's the only one who's had an affair, but she's having "late night liqor phone calls" with her lover which are making her partner suspicous and he's asking questions which are making her nervous(and who said it was cool to be asking me these questions)and she's scared he's going to find out "why I can't love you". she's still pretty sure her secret is "safe behind a pretty smile" but she's starting to panic and get confused ,so the song starts off without any questions but by the end it's almost entirely questions. But in that case, why doesn't she just leave her current partner? Anyone any ideas? I only worked out this second interpretation as I was writing this and now I really want to know! |

O.k., I really really like this song, the tune and singing are great and Taylor Swift's a great singer and can sing anything but I thought the words were kind of mean. If the guy she's singing about wrote a song about her too then he deservers it but in that case why is she mostly hating on the girl? Seems a bit unfair. Still, it is a good song and I do love Taylor Swift |

| Yeah, the others have basically said it all..following the crowd isn't the only way to go and sometimes it's cool to be yourself. This is one of my fave songs ever | |
| The All-American Rejects – Gives You Hell Lyrics | 16 years ago |

One of the music videos I saw(not the official one) cuts out the lines "Truth be told I miss you and truth be told I'm lying" which annoys me because without them the song sounds mean, whereas if he still misses her it's easier to understand why he wants to "Give her Hell" (unless of course the "I'm lying" bit is talking about the "I miss you" bit and in that case it's just weird.) Then again, maybe she was really mean and nasty about dumping him and deserves Hell whatever. Or maybe some of the other comments are right and it isn't about a relationship at all.... But judging by the video I was talking about it is. I don't think it can be about a real ex though, because of the "I miss you" and "you'll never see what you've done to me." You wouldn't let an ex you were really bitter at know that. |

I don't see why anyone should have to stay in a relationship in which they aren't happy There's some interesting ideas on here but I think some people are trying to read too much into it. It's just about a relationship finishing though she still loves him- though probably only as a friend. It wouldn't be about God because it's her first proper single and they're trying to make her mainstream at the moment- some mainstream singers do religious stuff but not as their first single. Whatever it's about I love this song -the tune is beautiful and her voice is beautiful and even though the subject isn't completely happy, it still makes me really happy. I've played it so many times and I'm not at all sick of it yet. |
