I have the special edition of Ghost Reveries and the concept was said by Mikael to be about stages of a demonic possession. i think this song in-particular is about how the main characters grandmother is dying and kind of hints at a secret that she has been possessed by a demon or something. she dies before telling him the whole story so he is unaware of what is to come (him getting possessed soon after her death). ghost of perdition means ghost of hell (a demon). so yea... the rest of the album shows how the possession progresses through different stages of how he copes with the demon and such. The Grand Conjuration at the end of the story (isolation years being kind of seperate from the story) is like an Exrocism of sort. now i cannot tell whether he ends up getting the spirit out or if he kind of gets fully taken by the demon. you can figure that out for your self. Tell me why Love subsides In the light Of your wish Say my name Ease the pain Clear the smoke In my head *last few lines from "The Grand Conjuration". |

I think this song is about how Nergal feels about the "church" or religion in general. He is saying religion and faith can be a very good way to help you through hard times and that it is not all garbage that means nothing."in my church of liberation, where doubts and fears wither away..." The main thing he hates about religion and Christianity is all the power hungry leaders in organized Christianity, but what people truly believe in themselves he is fine with. "in the church of indifference, so innocent in their guilt. perfect in their imperfection..." in this verse he is almost speaking for god. the "evil" leaders of the church are guilting their followers into what they believe. then he goes on to say they think they are so perfect they are almost better than god. finally he is speaking as god when he writes, "let my children play". he is saying that people have a right to choose what to believe and what not to believe. people need to find what is right for them. the final two stanzas are saying that basically he used to be a catholic but has left that behind. he has found his way of thinking and is trying to communicate this message to his listeners. people need to find what ideology is right for them. -please comment on different ways you would interpret this song to be. i am interested to hear them! |
