I don't know if they write to Congress, but they do have ties to environmental causes, including the National Resources Defense Council and spoke out against our petroleum dependence and saying that more nuclear plants are not the solution to our energy problem. The NRDC also speaks out for habitat destruction, global warming, rainforest harvesting, etc. So, as far as not being socially active...guess that's out the window. And if you want to get real picky, every word of American Idiot and a good chunk of the Breakdown album is an act of defiance in itself by questioning our government and corporation and their self righteousness and self importance. Heck, when American Idiot came out, patriotism was at a premium, and speaking against the president and the government horrified many radio stations and they wouldn't play American Idiot. |

At the 21st Century Breakdown tour in Albany (awesome show, get tickets if you can find them), Billy Joe actually gave an insight into what the song means. He said to throw your hands up if you were tired of your boss, your job, being stuck behind a computer, hearing and seeing the same recycled songs, shows, commercials, and being bombarded with corporate, political, and religious messages every hour of the day at every corner. Then he said that he was sick of it too, and that it never seems to end because we live in 'The Static Age'. So, in other words, the 'static' is the saturation of our lives with ads, political garbage, bad news, and never being left to create our own thoughts about things, express our own opinions without having the 'right' answers poured down our throats on the radio, on tv, and the internet, etc. |
