I think that the white houses are symbolizing the dreams and plans they once had. They had these perfect dreams and visions, surrounded by their innocence. When she makes reference to the white houses: 'But I hold on to your secrets in white houses' Perhaps she's saying that when they were young and had all these dreams and stuff, they told eachtoher secrets and those secrets stayed locked in that time; even when they grew apart or broke up or whatever, they remained secrets. Perhaps, it also means that they lived that time with a lot of secrets; from eachother, from their families, etc. all in search of being their own person and what not. 'Love, or something ignites in my veins And I pray it never fades, in white houses' She's saying that when she looks back on it all, she never wants to forgot those feelings; she wants to remember what that 'love' felt like at the time. She's also saying that she sort of wants to leave it in her past, along with the hopes, dreams, etc. (represented by the houses), but not forget. This reminds me of what I'm sort of going through right now. Summer's coming to a close and I'm starting to think that my relationship was all a summer fling. When the leaves change and sesaon changes, what will happen to us? During the summer, especially when you're young, summer seems to last forever. You make the best memories and have the most fun. Same goes with relationships. They are carefree and lovely because you have all the time in the world and no school or work to cloud that. In the song, I think he's saying that he thought they could last forever but obviously his girl had other plans. He saw it coming but didn't want to believe it. He didn't want to believe that it was just a fling. But when then he lost it to the weather; fall came and he lost her. Looking back he can see that it was coming all along but being young and stupid he didn't want to beleive that they were ending as a couple. He wonders how and why she screwed him up so badly and made it seem like they would last if she knew that it was just a fling. He's saying that as time goes by, he begins to get over her and he just never wants to see her again. He doesn't want her to come back to him ever. OMG this so relates to my life. The meaning seems pretty clear and I can't believe no one has commented yet. The song is amazing in so many ways!! So my interpretation: She's going through some stuff in her life and just can't seem to get things right. She's trying to be happy and live her life the way she wants to live it but it just doesn't seem to be working for whatever reason so she feels like life is almost against her, hence the 'I'm at the back of the line, feels like eternity'. It's like she's saying that she's waiting for her happiness to come but it seems forever away. People keep telling her that things have to turn around but she just can't figure out when that'll happen(hence the 'Well, they tell me I'm gettin' close, but I know I'm still far'). It sounds like maybe she was in an abusive situation before or maybe she's just had some bad luck. Maybe the scars are emotional and she can't get over something and therefore she's unhappy and everyone can see through her fake smiles and acts. So she says she's become a pro at hide and seek, making me think that she's learned how to pretend she's happy and is afraid to let her true colours show in fear of people not understanding her. She feels that she's a danger to herself because she knows what she's going through and how she's hiding it but she can't seem to help herself out of the rut. But then she finds this guy, or something, that just gets her for who she actually is. She opened up to him (whether as a friend or bf or gf or husband or whatever) and she can count on them. She knows that if she screws up, he’ll be there with her for support. She knows that if she ‘crashes and burns’, he’ll come looking. When he’s around, she feels like everything is right. She feels invincible because she knows that no matter what she screws up, he won’t let her screw herself up/he will still be there to care for her. She feels that if she needs his help, with anything, he’ll lend a hand and do everything in his power to cheer her up. ‘Want to be part of the cure, but I'm part of the disease. I can chase butterflies, but I get stung by the bees. Sometimes I think too much, forget my clarity.’ This makes me think that she keeps screwing up no matter what her intentions are. She tries to let herself be happy but then something comes back to bite her in the ass despite her best intentions. So she tries to fix herself with all those books and yoga (downward dog pose?) but realizes that to fix herself, she has to know who she is/was before she got all screwy and lost. So what good is self help and therapy if she doesn’t know what she’s trying to fix because she’s too messed up? But in the end, this guy, or whatever, had found her and with him, she feels whole. She feels like nothing can go wrong. And I know no one cares, but that is so the story of my life. I went through a phase where I felt so lost and I didn’t even know myself anymore. I scared myself and was confused. But with this one guy, I felt whole. He would bring me back to reality when I got screwed up. He didn’t judge me when I broke down. So with him, I feel invincible. I know that no matter what, no matter what I do or say, he’ll be there to fix me or at least catch me when the bees sneak up and sting me while I’m being naive and happy... |

I think this song can almost have two meanings: 1) Her boyfriend is acting distant and she can sense it ('I can read the lines on you face...'). She can feel that he is no feeling the same he used to and she knows it's only a matter of time before they break-up. She, however, doesn't want to do the breaking up, so in the meantime, the knowledge that he will inevitably dump her eats her up inside. She hates the way things turned out, but she realizes she can't force him to love her. The part where she's in the park is sort of sad. She feels all alone and confused and hurt. He took away her innocence, her chance at love, and although he tried to make it work, the effort wasn't enough cus she's going to end up alone. He made her complete (metaphorically cus of love)but now she's left with the after-sting. He left her (maybe he cheated on her, hence the original distance) and although he tried to make it right by leaving her instead of lying, he took away his love, the thing she wanted most. That would explain the hopeless part cus she feels hopeless for loving such a jerk. She just wanted a quick goodbye but instead she watched it be dragged out as she waited for his confession and breakup. Slow goodbyes are the worse cus you know it's gonna happen but you don't want it to so the pain is worse. She sorta wants to keep hanging on, but she doesn't want this to be dragged out. She knows that time will not make him love her cus nothing can if he truly doens't... 2)She liked this guy who was just a friend but he only thought of her as a friend. So when she's sitting with him, hanging out, and maybe flirting a little, she can feel the distance he puts between them cus he doesn't feel the same way. Maybe he even flirts back a little, but it's empty to her cus she knows he will never be more than a friend. She tries to keep her cool, but inside, it's killing her. She knows she can't make him fall for her. She knows that he's just flirting with her cus he's being a guy and having fun, but she wishes it was more. Maybe he tried to fix things by breaking away from her or telling her that she was just a friend. But in the process, that kills her cus all she ever wanted was to be his. So she feels a bit hopeless cus she's wasted all this energy and love and time on this guy who was being a tool. She doesn't want to drag out the pain of getting over him, but she knows it won't be fast (since they're friends they probably see eachother at school everyday or at work or whereever). She just wants it to be quick but on the other hand, he's a part of her, and she wants to savour ever moment while it's there and doesn't want it all brutally cut out in an instant. She hates that he keeps playing her and screwing with her mind. Maybe he's flirting, but then refusing to go out with her.It's just a bunch of circles to her and all that she ends up with is pain and she doesn't get the guy. I guess she just wishes that he'll just disappear off the face of the earth so that everything will end, just like that. Then maybe she could get over him, rather than have to face the reality everyday that he's just using her but she still loves him. |

Ok. This song has got to be like my favourite by her atm! It's so ridiculously relatable, it's not even funny. Basically, this guy she's known for a while (probably a friend) just kissed her and now she's all uncertain how to preceed (even if she does like him) cus she doesn't want to screw up their friendship or anything. She doesn't know whether to start being 'with' him or whether to pretend the ordeal didn't happen, move on but then lose the chance (hence the 'do we pretned these feelings don't...). She's also confused as to why she has begun feeling nervous around this guy she used to be so comfortable with. She's confused and not sure what to do. She wants to know whether it's just a phase or whether it could last (hence the 'it's temporary insanity. what's going on with you and me? is it real or is it fantasy? forever or just temporary...'). She begins to wonder (maybe he says something or begins to act weird or distant) if maybe it was a mistake but if it was, it can'tbe undone cus they're more than friends now. And although she wonders if messing with their friendship was a mistake, she doesn't know if she'd want it to be any different cus she's happy and falling for this guy (and maybe realizing they could be sooo perfect). So although she's confused and nervous and hesitant, she's pretty happy with the mental confusion cus she has him. To me, this song seems like her best guy friend fell for her and she sorta liked him too. The casual conversation at the beginning, the late night, the casual cuddling she was expecting, all lead me to beleive they are best friends but then he just kissed her. Now she's feeling a little uncertain about what all this is cus she's trying to determine if there's sparks, or if he's still just a friend, and what to tell their friends, and all that stuff. She's also wondering if that kiss means they're together now or what. The line 'it's just the right amount of awkward. And today, you accidently called me baby' sounds very new-relationship-y. It's still a bit weird (esp cus they're friends and such) but they're progressing and he obviously likes you (hence the 'baby'). She's feeling giddy and stuff that this is all working out and he actually likes /her/. When she's with him she's happy and feels safe and what not but she's still a tad bit hesitant. I love the last sorta part: Told your friends, they all know we exist, but we're taking it slow lets just see how it goes now, lets see how it goes Perfect to describe a new love/relationship thing. The uncertainty but also the pride. The want to have people know, but also the awkwardness of people knowing (esp if you break up). It sounds to me like a guy broke up with her and she's thinking back. She remembers just letting him walk away even though she clearly had something to say but she chose not to say it. Now, looking back, she realizes that the 'not saying anything' is what's eating her up inside cus she'll never know what would've happened had she just spoken her mind. It also suggests that there were multiple occasions where she kept her mouth shut, but now she regrets it as 'what ifs...' keep popping up in her mind. The whole verse where she sings about 'maybe I was never...' makes it seem like those are all the things she wished she had said or asked cus now she'll never know. She'll never know if he did love her or whether it was just a hoax. When I hear this song I sorta think that the girl is sending the guy mixed signals (well it could work vice versa too, with a guy sending mixed signals). The guy is confused and thinking how 'Did you say please just follow me.I thought you wanted me' and how if she wants him, he wants her all to himself; he doesn't want her to just have a fling with him...or multiple flings. He wants her to be his, and his alone, if they are going to have a relationship. He feels like he's losing at life cus he can't seem to win over this girl and he sorta blames himself for it cus he can't seem to not screw up. But at the same time he sorta bames her for the mixed signals. He wonders if he can simply 'suck it up' and move on, but he wants to see what can happen to their relationship cus he was certain that she did want him. Not sure if this makes much sense *shrugs*. I think it's basically this guy whose looking back in time and thinking about how much he screwed himself over by falling for this girl. Maybe he spent time obsessing over her even when she turned him down or insisted she didn't like him. But then they did get together and made some memories and had a great time. But like a lot of things, the good things come to an end eventually. So he's kinda looking back and thinking about how much pain he's put himself through over some girl. But he wouldn't change it or the memories for the world, hence the 'i'd do it all again for you' Orrrr. Another thing this song kinda makes me tink of is that this guy is with the girl now, but looking back, through their memories and history with eachother (before they were dating; maybe they were friends or soemthing?)he can see how much pain and stuff he put himself through by liking this girl who at the time couldn't care less. So the song could sorta be like him telling this girl that it doesn't matter cus all he wants is to be with her and he'd take that pain anyday to know that he'll get a chance to be with her. In other words, he wouldn't trade the pain for the memories or her cus he'd 'do it all again for you' |
