| I dunno - I think the use of religion in the lyrics, here, is metaphorical. He's equating unrequited love with a religious experience. And, frankly, I think saying the song is "as simple" as being about a boy who didn't like him back diminishes its brilliance is a) diminishing the significance of this event in the artist's life (love, especially first love, can be an intense and life-altering experience) and b) ignoring the fact that some of the most profound and moving poetry in human history has been written about exactly that kind of thing. | |

I see that it definitely could be interpreted as him totally lying to himself about being over someone...but when I first heard it, my impression was more along the lines of what illrider mentions - that, you know, most of the time, he doesn't think about it, he's OK, he can smile and move on and whatever, but most of the time is not ALL of the time, and so the song is about those moments when he feels the exact opposite of everything he talks about, when the pain comes back, and that he just can't get to being over it all of the time. Amazing song, no matter how you slice it. |
