This loosely reminds me of two people: Joan of Arc and a Tale of Two Cities character. Joan of Arc was made the Patron Saint of France (a country Regina makes many references to in many of her songs). She was a schizophrenic: "absolutely insane". Joan of Arc said various saints were telling her things; she told the French monarchy said things, and saved the monarchy of France. She ended up dying for France, "break[ing] her own heart", if you will. Secondly, it reminds me of the maiden Sydney Carton ("Charles Darnay") met, just before they both faced their deaths. The "darling, let go of her hand" line led me to this allusion. Not sure about either of those, just some food for thought. |
