Joanna Newsom – Good Intentions Paving Company Lyrics 16 years ago
The entire song is framed by the old adage fadingripple mentioned, pretty much - "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." Joanna is acknowledging that the course of love she's taken is leading her straight to Hell, but by song's end, she still wants "to stay right here in the right lane." Most of the song, though, seems to be centered on her observations about the relationship, about the world, and, by extension, about herself . . At the VERY end, she desires to just pull over, to opt OUT of adages and courses pre-laid by fictional companies. Gorgeous.

Deftones – Xerces Lyrics 16 years ago
Very much like 'Bloody Cape' or 'Hole in the Earth,' in the sense that's it's about transcending the Earth and finding some other realm, either through love or drugs or spirituality or whatever . . . I think the secret implication here, however, is that transcending the Earth will not always result in happiness, i.e., 'I don't if the change made was great, 'cause the craving remains the same.' Essentially, humans will always be looking for some greater paradise, for some more-perfect transcendence. Like Xerces, even if our closest encounters with perfection will eventually in failure, or death.

Deftones – Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is a reference to 9/11. The 'waves' could be the waves of emotion that passed throughout the country, the feeling of great loss and despair, as in a 'wave of sadness,' not to mention the 'waves' 9/11 made in the news. I think Chino's point is that this initial sadness was quickly replaced by desires for vengeance and retribution, and that those who died were quickly forgotten in the 'rocket's rain,' the fervor of war.

Deftones – Rapture Lyrics 16 years ago
When I hear this song, I get the feeling Moreno is taking jabs at the United States' two-party system; he's insinuating that, despite the superficial differences, the two parties are the same in their oppressive tactics - "two different tools, different pieces." In a broader sense, the song could be about any opposites that seem different, but are actually having the same effect on those who have to choose between them. Christianity / atheism, progressive / liberal, et cetera. The Latin root of the word 'rapture' deals with being seized or captured, as in a trance; even though the 2008 election wasn't even around the corner by the time this song was released, it reminds me of all the Obama-ites praising his glory - I mean, I voted for him, but there was the sense that people were being raptured away on the basis of Obama's rhetoric, "the different style."

Deftones – Hole in the Earth Lyrics 16 years ago
i think this song just expresses the desire to transcend the petty bullshit of the Earth, sometimes . . . or it could be a subtle reference to global warming, but that's kind of a stretch.

Sparklehorse – Saint Mary Lyrics 16 years ago
Confined to a hospital, the narrator wants to return to some form of simplicity - the hospital is a 'bright theater,' a stage where he feels exposed, and yet inexplicably lonely.
