Placebo – Meds Lyrics 16 years ago
I really had to wrap my head around this one. What a brilliant song with a very fitting video. Just love the disturbing imagery! For someone who can relate to this song and/ or video, it becomes truly memorable. I'm not sure what exactly this song means, but I can offer my opinion based on the lyrics, the video, the nature of Placebo's music and what it means to me. Brian Molko has said that he writes songs based on his past experiences and mostly about his failed relationships. I perceive this song as an account of what his life was like in the midst of his drug usage and at the height of his career. Most ex addicts will admit that they can't remember in clarity, the details of their "drugs, sex and rock n roll" days. The video seems to depict this clearly, as Molko wakes up in a hotel room, seemingly perplexed and still hallucinating with a vague recollection of the night before. To me it seems like the character in the song (Molko) was trying not to lose grip of reality, but the drugs and alcohol messed him up pretty bad.

He was in a relationship, but screwed it up. “I was confused by the birds and the bees. Forgetting if I meant it.” Maybe he had sex with someone else, but regretted it because he was too out of it to even remember why he did it. Another possibility is that he became involved with a woman after a one night stand with her while in a drug induced state and now he’s wondering why he’s with her. He’s always on drugs so he’s probably seldom sober in her presence. Because of this he’s not sure if he feels anything for her or if it’s just the drugs. So he’s acting weird around her, perhaps even morbid, hence the question- “Baby, did you forget to take your meds (drugs)?” A question posed to him.

When he was high he was happy, but as soon as it wore off he would feel alone and depressed. “I was alone, falling free. Trying my best not to forget.” He doesn’t want to forget how good it feels to be on that high. He’s dependant on the drugs as if it is medication making him better. Sobriety is a sad reality for him. The music gets more and more intense as the song progresses, indicating that his addiction is getting worse.

This is what I think. Anyone care to comment? Am I on to something or just plain nuts! Lol!

Placebo – Sleeping With Ghosts Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems to be a song about a Romeo and Juliet kinda love. Two people from completely different worlds and possibly different religions and races, fall in love and are forced to stay away from each other. The only thing that keeps them going is their promise to one another. Soulmates never die. So one day they will be together again.

A timeless classic as interpreted by Placebo. One of my favourites.

Placebo – Plasticine Lyrics 16 years ago
People take the saying "be yourself" way too seriously! As humans each and every one of us is unique and complex beyond simplistic comprehension. For example, I have many facets to my personality. I have a hardcore, moshing metal head, talkative, weird and crazy side to me. Then I also have a pro peace and human rights, quiet, poetic, Coldplay/ CrashCarBurn/ Placebo loving side to me. There's so much more to me and I consider it all apart of me and what makes me who I am. So to say that if we were all ourselves we wouldnt have any friends, sounds kinda ludicrous to me. Why wouldnt we have friends? Yeah, sure some people pretend around their friends, but thats not everyone. There's a difference between being yourself and being a different version of yourself. And true friends love you for who you are and not who you pretend to be.

As I see it, this song is about not moulding yourself according to other peoples expectations of you. Dont succumb to social norms and peer pressure. Being what society deems to be acceptable or beautiful might boost yourself esteem, but it fades with youth and then you are left with nothing, but yourself. So its better to love who you are and not rely on others to make you feel worthy.

Great song by a great band! :)

Placebo – English Summer Rain Lyrics 16 years ago
Placebo's songs are usually sexually orientated and about relationships. Everyday emotions of love, loss and longing. To me this song is about a guy who's in love with someone who is out of his league. Perhaps even too good for him. Maybe its an annotation of Brian Molko's love for someone he couldnt be with while living in England (he still lives there, if I'm not mistaken). Rain usually symbolises crying, dark times, sadness, depression. I assume he spent his days drinking and using drugs (fall apart, start again) and every day was the same mundane routine. Just drink it all away, wake up feeling worse and then just drink it all away again. It could be that he'd always wanted her or perhaps they were together, but she left him and it was his fault that she left. Either way, great song! And I'm a huge fan of the band!

Frou Frou – Let Go Lyrics 16 years ago
Cloudyst I think you're on to something. I love the Garden State soundtrack and the movie was awesome! This song is also on the soundtrack of The holiday (another good movie). I think "letting go" refers to allowing yourself to just feel instead of holding back emotions and reactions. Especially if you watch both Garden state and The holiday and consider how the song applies to the movie. Zach Braff's character wouldn't allow himself to give in to his emotions and just feel his anger and sorrow and just let go of it all. He kept it bottled up inside. Even though life can be so hard at times, we need to be angry and sad and release our frustrations and stop putting up walls around ourselves. It's just so much better to feel! In The holiday, Cameron Diaz's character can't seem to let go and just have fun. Then she meets Jude Law and she takes a chance on love and starts doing things she never thought she would!
"you bubble wrap when you've no idea what your like"
I think this applies to opening yourself up to taking more risks in life. Again, a good example is Cameron Diaz's character. She was so afraid of being hurt so she never gave her heart away. You could say she lived her life bubble wrapped, always protecting herself. When you let go and allow yourself to love and be loved, only then will you experience true happiness or "boundless pleasures" and see how happy you could really be. Life's an adventure! Through heartache and happiness, as long as you allow yourself to just let go and take chances and live life to the full! Thats what this song is all about. That's my take on it. :)
