I know I've commented on this song before, but I just wanted to added a few things. At their concert a year ago or so, they ended with this song. It just seems kind of fitting if it is about death or endings or something along those lines. By the way, it may seem impossible, but i think they're about a million times better live. He just puts soooo much emotion into his singing. It's really amazing to see them, I highly recommend that you all do. Also, the line about crossing the finish line while everyone wants to run and hide, it seems to fit in with death. Death is the end of the race. Life has finished. Usually, ending a race seems like a good thing, but in this context, it's sad. That's why people are running and hiding. And lastly, the whole stanza (I'm not 100 percent sure that's the right term) about the girl who at one point had a name makes me so emotional. I think of those lines every single time I see an old photograph. This person in the photo had a name. They had a life, they had a family, they had a history. Now it's lost, and even her name is gone. All that's left is a picture. It makes me think about how some day in the future, somebody will look at a photo of me, and they won't know my name, or anything about me. It makes me sad, but it's also sort of peaceful in a way that I can't explain. Those lines are probably my favorite lyrics ever. |
