to me the second line sounds like "no cold hard love saw his emotional abacus" this would make it more directed at someone in particular, which would make a little sense since it's written about the government of the time. |

I just remembered, in an earlier version he played of this, there's a short section after the "won't let the ship go down" part that finishes the song: "I'll bet good money, I'll bet some beautiful money that we could agree to disagree" As you said, the album lyrics could be different, but I thought I'd add that little bit. |

I think the line after "I've idled here as long as I can" goes "I've taken my entertainment like a man" rather than "taken my enter, taken it like a man". I think also that the line goes, rather than "at the end of the elaborate drive", "at the end of the yellow brick drive". |
