I believe this song is about masturbation and the fantasy of a woman he wants. I'm lying in my bed The blanket is warm [that's the general location for this activity, right? ;) ] This body will never be safe from harm [euphemism for "beating" it] If only you'd come back to me If you laid at my side Wouldn't need no mojo pin To keep me satisfied [If only you were here i wouldn't need to masturbate to facilitate the connection i need with you.] Don't want to weep for you, don't want to know [I don't want to pine for you, don't want to know why you're not here] I'm blind and tortured, the white horses flow The memories fire, the rhythms fall slow [the white horses are semen, the memories are the basis of the fantasy, and the rhythms are the cadence of strokes] Black beauty I love you so [possibly "black" beauty because she represents the dark unrequited love that tortures him] Precious, precious silver and gold and pearls in oyster's flesh [the fantasy continues..."precious" to him, like these minerals. Also, "pearl in an oyster's flesh" could be a euphemism for the clitoris] i think once you have the masturbation metaphor in your mind, it's pretty easy to see how the rest of the lyrics coincide with my theory. Most of Buckley's songs are about love and how he tries to capture those moments with his music...I may be wrong, but now I can't listen to this song without thinking about this act that is so delicate and vulgar at the same time. :) |

This song is about Masturbation. First line of the first verse: "I'm lying in my bed, the blanket is warm" (Prime Location/Prime Situation) & the subsequent lyrics in this verse provide the prime mentality as well... of 'wanting' her. Second Verse: "If only you'd come back to me If you laid at my side Wouldn't need no mojo pin To keep me satisfied" (I can't tell you how many times a d00d has said this to me as a reason to choke his bishop...lmao comical really.) Most is revealed in the Chorus: "Don't wanna weep for you, don't wanna know" (it's a tortured love, which (imho) the best kind always are.) "I'm blind and tortured, the white horses flow" (aka white soldiers, skeet, nut, splooge, etc) "The memories fire, the rhythms fall slow" (after the 'memories' have fired, the rhythm does fall slow) "Black Beauty, I Love You, so" (and that he does...since it's all over his warm blanket now in tribute to her) **also, notice how the music gets really 'full' and loud at this point, and then drops off right afterwards...gatdawmn jeff buckley was a genius*** The rest is mostly about her, wanting, craving, etc. Never as good without the real thing. :( In the Third Verse: "Precious, precious silver and gold And pearls in oyster's flesh (In perfect metaphor he get's to thinking about her again...and her "pearl") "Drop down we two to serve and pray to love" (my favorite piece of imagery in this unforgettable love ballad) "Born again from the rhythm screaming down from heaven Ageless, ageless and i'm there in your arms" (and he's gonna give it a second go, of course..it's his Black Beauty!! of course she deserves a second round ;)~ ) ************ I know this may be far fetched for some of you, but i've listened to this song a million times over, and I just now got an epiphany as to what he might be saying.. Masturbation is a HUGE part of love (especially in the beginning, and especially for men) Buckley wrote about the deepest, yet simplest forms of human emotion. It makes so much sense for him to be so bold/genius as to make a song like this, And leave us with such a sweet, sensual mystery in our hearts. Now, I'm sure there are several other metaphore's in this song as well, maybe including voodoo/dark magic/drugs or what have you...However, I'm convinced the main theme is about a night he was fondling his Mojo Pin. ;) |
