Metric – Black Sheep Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that the song is about two people who connect in one way or another through sorrow
ie .Hello again, friend of a friend, I knew you when
Our common goal was waiting for the world to end

And then things change between them some way or another causing confrontation that one always brushes under the rug, pretending it didn't happen...
ie. Now that the truth is just a rule that you can bend
You crack the whip, shape-shift and trick the past again

But the one still can't loving the other despite all the frustration and stay by their side... even when nobody else will put up with them
ie. I'll send you my love on a wire
Lift you up, everytime, everyone, ooo, pulls away, ooo
From you

Then he/she starts finding more to life than this other person but can't seem to pull away from the habit of cleaning up his/her messes, picking up the pieces when he/she gets hurt
ie. Got balls of steel, got an automobile, for a minimum wage
Got real estate, I'm buying it all up in outerspace
Now that the truth is just a rule that you can bend
You crack the whip, shape-shift and trick, the past again

This iterates the fact that she/he keeps staying by the other's side no matter what... even as they chase fruitless pursuits (most likely relationship/sexual due to the "you'll take a ride from anyone") and that they'll pick him/her up when it inevitably fails.
ie. I'll send you my love on a wire
Lift you up, everytime, everyone, ooo, pulls a way, oo
Mechanical bull, the number one
You'll take a ride from anyone, everyone wants a ride, pulls away, oooh from you

It seems to me that the song is about two people who meet and become close through some sort of tragedy or unpleasant event... ie

You crack the whip, shape-shift and trick the past again

Lior – I'll Forget You Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with most of what you have both said, but I think that maybe it hadn't been a relationship YET. When the song says "it's time to forget the road we never traveled along," I feel it implies that he knew they couldn't be together, but that didn't stop him from falling in love, so when it came time to make a decision, he knew that there would be no future, so he left with what little heart he had left to save himself from more pain later.
