I'm pretty sure this is more about a man coming to terms with the prevalent sexism that is so ingrained in his culture, and by result, implanted in him as well. He comments on how, at a young age, he was 'taught' how men and women should act, and about the supposed 'superiority' of men over women, and he struggles with these beliefs. He knows they're wrong, but they're so ingrained. His fears are captured quite well here: "I'm scared of my attraction to body types. If everything desired is objectified then maybe eroticism needs to be redefined." He worries (much like I do, sometimes) if his desire towards women is leading him to treat them as sexual objects, as unequals. In the end, he decides not to submit to society's standards of what a man must be, or how he must treat women. He'd rather be a 'sissy', a 'pussy', than a 'man'. |

Yeah, this is the obvious meaning. In Winnipeg, the North End is notorious for youth violence, poverty, etc. Much like the typical inner-city ghetto. "We stood our ground waiting for the fight to begin. My eyes squinted at the sun, wondering if they'd swing or run. I tell no lie: jackknives in socks, they're all gonna die. Tensions rise. Pre-pubes swarm the hill like flies. Get the caskets ready, we're going to tear right through this city." This bit is pretty clear, the narrator is a member of one of the gangs, and from 'pre-pubes' we can tell that the combatants are no more than children, armed with 'Jacknives in socks'. "Farce and death walk hand in hand. Graves and memorial walls hold my family name. Pills and bottles do the same. I hope that freedom's coming our way." The costs of this violence contribute to more violence, drug addiction and poverty. Nothing of this song paints a positive image... not even: 'The fight never happened. The crowd petered out. We all dribbled home. Mission accomplished." It seems that this fight is over, but I'm reminded of George Bush's famous Airforce One blunder, with the Mission Accomplished banner prematurely hanging pridefully. Even now, his legacy is still embroiled in Iraq. The message is clear, even though this small skirmish ended without tragedy, the issue is far from resolved. |
