This song has two meanings. One is about a guy who thinks he's not good enough for a girl (such as the line "I can't hurt you anymore"), but he hopes she will remember him and and that he left some positive impact on her like she did to him. Another meaning is I associate this with death. It possibly goes deeper than a break up. It could be a significant other who has died and is asking her to move on with her life and see other people, but he hopes she remembers him. The line "and I can't hurt you anymore" is asking her to not let the sad feelings of his death destroy her. He just wants to be remembered in a positive light. This song doesn't even need to be about a romantic relationship. It could just be about a friend or a loved one. With those two meanings this is a very melancholy yet beautiful song. I love the bridge. |

| There is so much suffering in the world. We all experience some of that suffering to at least extent, and it even hurts to watch others suffer. Cher is being a little sarcastic in some of these lyrics. She asks you if you "wish your heart was made of stone", but would you really want that? If you had a heart of stone you would not feel anything. If you did not recognize sadness you could never experience love and happiness, and you would not want to make the world a better place for others because you have a cold heart of stone. Suffering is just a part of life, but we also have good experiences, and with the use of our soft hearts we make things right. | |
