| CielMinna: Who authorized you to allege on the internet that Tuomas was "raped when he was younger"? You should be ashamed of yourself for making such a sensational and unfounded statement about Tuomas's personal life, especially in such a private and area. Where do you get this information? It is not mentioned in any of the documentaries, interviews or the official Nightwish Biography, which means even if it were true, it is only hearsay as far as you are concerned. You are basically "gossiping" about Tuomas being raped, which is something shocking and horrible to say about anyone, even more so if it did happen to be true and Tuomas had not himself made it public knowledge. I would encourage you to edit that statement out of your post. | |

I want to make two quick points here that I feel have gone unmentioned, even though I really liked and agreed with many of the other commentaries (and also disagreed with some). First, I believe that the part of the chorus "I cannot cry cause the shoulder cries more, I cannot die, I, a whore for the cold world", can be understood very well and more deeply by looking at previous nightwish songs, especially Dead Gardens. Dead gardens states, "Tired, but I'm unable to give up, since I am responsible for the lives I've saved." This is quite literal, as Tuomas stated in the Biography that during the intermission between Wishmaster and Century Child, when he was thinking of ending the band altogether, one of his motivations to continue was that he had recived letters from fans stating that Nightwish lyrics had disuaded them from committing suicide and inspired them to keep living. Toumas has implied in many songs and interviews that it is exhausting to have to keep up his work, his inspiration to his fans, because he is responsible to them. How can he "cry", when he has such a desperate world to please and comfort because he is thier voice? How can he let down the masses?" Secondly, I wanted to mention that there is a very interesting bit of timing hidden in the song: In The Pacific it states, "Now I only have three minutes and counting". This line ends at exactly 3:54 into the song. After the spoken part in Dark Passion Play, it says "Save Me!", Shhiiinnggggggg! That high pitched sound occurs at exactly 6:54 into the song, exactly 3 minutes, to the second, after it says "Three Minutes and Counting". This emplies that that sound is the pendulum cutting the songwriter in half, the ultimate realization of his fears expressed in the pacific when he is "Strapped down to the altar". |

I am not trying to speak for Tuomas, but this song bears some exact parellels to the experience of Astral Projection (controlled out-of-body experiences) and the world that one can discover when practicing this art. Through practice and meditation, one can slip out of thier physical body while in a state of deep relaxation and move about with full lucid consciousness in a tranlucent energy body that is sometimes referred to as an "Astral Body". As a quick search on youtube or google will inform you, this is phenomena is a hot topic and is the focus of much scientific and metaphysical debate. The song begins with the eager, excited boy wondering what the "free fall" will feel like. Beginners in Astral Projection often emerge from thier bodies by "falling" downward with a feeling of intense vibration and exhileration. This is a truly exciting and transforming experience. Once in one's astral body, one can explore the "Astral Plane" or dimention, and many students of this practice claim to be able to journey freely and weightlessly into the deep reaches of space. (Freed from the gravital leash, I swear the heaven´s in my reach). According to many testimonies, the astral "aura" around the earth, inhabited by spirits and the astral bodies of humans and animals, extends out to the moon, and that while flying in the upper levels of the astral plane it is dificult to distinguish the surface of the moon from the earth itself. (Can't tell if this is the earth or the moon). Almost all who have had these out of body experiences, including myself, can attest to the spiritual enlightenment and healing that they can provide, a feeling of empowerment, cleansing, and exciting freedom to explore without limits. As i.love.NIGHTWISH said, the song gives the feeling of being able to do anything, and that's exactly what astral projection is. (Joyful living is no more a mask, the Eden I found will forever last). One of the most exciting, controversial, and posibly even dangerous aspects of Astral Projection/OBE's is the ability that it gives one to interact with different beings and "spirits", who's identities dificult to define and may be subject to the religous interpretations of the individual. In some way, you are in the "spirit world". However, it is possible to have deep and intimate, even romantic/sexual communication with all kinds of amazing beings in the astral plane, which is an intensely beautiful, bright, and ethereal place. (Dancing with the spirit of the air, In this ocean so open and fair, Making love to the gods above, On my maiden voyage so bold.) Finally, mankind has had the desire and dream of being able to fly since the beginning of time. Our inability to fly is what binds us to the earth and makes us mortal humans. Howwever through Astral Travel, it is possible to "fly", to anywhere you want in the world in a matter of seconds, and even to the limits of the universe, without gravity or physical boundaries affecting you. (Doesn't matter that man has no wings, as long as I hear the Nightingale sing). Taking this one step further, in the Angels Fall First album, Tuomas expreses a lot of enthusiasm for fantasy, and exploration of the etherial. The song "Elvenpath" is all about escaping into one's own fantasy world of beauty and magic, and the song Astral Romance (yes, ASTRAL Romance), is a deeply etherial and otherworldly journey of love, emotion, and oneness with the universe after death. It has many ties with "Nightingale" and with travel beyond the body, beyond death, and beyond the boundaries of the world. Interestingly, the Astral Plane/dimention, or the beautiful gravity-free world where you will find yourself if you practive inducing Out-of-Body experiences, has been referred to in religious and metaphysical/scientific literature as the realm of emotions, feelings, and desires. Many people believe that when you experience emotions as a human being, they are not actually coming from your brain but rather being interpreted there as mesages from your astral body, or what is called in many cultures and relgions, your "Spirit". The real you. How fitting, therefore, that the song Astral Romance is all about desire, grief, and a long awaited reunion with a lost love. Even the final line (in the AFF version) implies an existence beyond the physical world or even galaxy but within a higher dimention, experiencing intense, eternal desire. (Above the universe, beneath the great eye, I shall desire you forevermore). The great eye, Nirvana to the Hindus and the "Logos" to the greeks, is a concept which comes up time and time again in different forms of mediation and spiritualism and can actually be "experienced" through astral projection. Eternal oneness with the universe; the original thought, the essense of being. "In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Know Why the Nightingale Sings is about journeying beyond one's body into the vast, exhilerating, cosmic freedom that lies beyond. |
