It's "I make little *lives* and then I tear them apart." Makes sense. Implies self-sabotage. The bride was part of one of his 'little lives,' and he pulled it apart, ruined it. |

I think that the first phrase of the chorus has a double meaning. I agree with the people that said coffin, but i think it also is the present he brought to the wedding. As he puts the box (the wedding present) down, he's trying to let her fade away because she's married now. But the lyric also works if the box is a coffin. (I don't think he's saying that marriage is death or the end, way to fucking cheezy. I think that he's implying that this wedding feels like the funeral of his chance to be with the bride.) Some people that commented on the dead friends in the lake said that they weren't dead, just boring. I see that. My first impression, however, is that the friends symbolize he and the bride's connections. I think he's either talking about how all of their connections died, or its both. My first impression when when I heard the deer and the dogs lyric was that they symbolized things that died unfairly and/or unaware. The deer was shot, most likely unaware, definitely unfair. The dog got hit by a car, unaware and unfair. I think that this fits with the proceeding lyrics in that they gather because they connect on feeling that their life or love or both we're taken unfairly, or unknowingly. Also, I definitely agree that the lyric says 'Psalm' not 'song.' Now, if you take the unfairly and unaware interpretation with the very first lyric of the song (Wait, I watched you throw out your bouquet, Now i think about you everyday, I'm alone now in my bed), it sounds like he just realized that he had lost her, that he misses her. He was unaware until just now. |

| Elliott Smith – No Name #5 Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This song contains one of his most moving chord progressions AND lyrics. Fear of intimacy, rigidity of being, and no seen sign of improvement. He was a depression junky, and created music for other fucked up kids to grow up on. His life and music, for me, allowed me to live vicariously through his self destruction. Sounds really fuckin' cheesy, but this album, song, and his story has helped save my life. I was able to look at his life and music, having grown up similarly as Smith, and see the consequences of creating a trend of digging deeper and deeper holes. I wish he was alive and well, but because he isn't and wasn't, he's a fuckin' martyr. |
