Yes – Long Distance Runaround Lyrics 14 years ago
I always wondered why they aren't considered a "religious" band like Switchfoot or others. inpraiseoffolly's idea of their rejection of organized religion could be why.

Also I think Anderson (this is without any proof whatsoever, just a thought) could have been influenced by the Romantic Poets who found their spiritual peace/religion in the beauty of nature.

Yes – Close to the Edge Lyrics 14 years ago
The members of Yes were all very religious, they were all vegetarians except Wakeman and no one can deny the strong presence of religious symbols and references in all of their songs.

Yes – Wonderous Stories Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm reading Dante's Purgitario and he mentioned that morning dreams are said to be visions of foresight, other elements of this song remind me of the book too. And they always mention rivers; I heard Siddhartha was a possible influence on Close to the Edge, maybe it's a reoccurring theme of theirs.

Steely Dan – Turn That Heartbeat Over Again Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is about a guy wishing to relive his life (from jail) so he wont make the same mistakes (buying a gun and holding up a bank or whatever he did).
Love your mama/brother is advice for the listener to not be like him.
Light off, shirt on makes me think hes advising to keep you cool.
Jag:
—noun
1. a period of unrestrained indulgence in an activity; spree; binge: a crying jag; a talking jag.

He possibly blames the devil for his sins "you know im not to blame" "good clean game"
He begs to relive his life.
Poison = vice: alcohol and "make it a double" Sam possibly the bartender.
Paraguay maybe where he would escape to, the distance he would go to get what he wants from Michael/Jesus.
William Wright (actor) - "portrayed department store owner and grasping landlord Ben Weaver in several episodes of CBS's The Andy Griffith Show" - wikipedia. This was the William Wright that sounds most likely to be in a Dan song, but there were plenty to choose from... and yeah, that's just my guess...

Steely Dan – Everyone's Gone to the Movies Lyrics 14 years ago
That sniffing glue idea sucks. Mom and Dad are glad the kids are "at the movies" and have alone time but what movies exactly? Creepiest song ever. Bobbing for apples might be what got the kids attention in the first place (just dont tell daddy or momma...) The narrator is only telling the story and has no actual role in the setting other than telling the listener. No hes not the accomplice, its just Steely Dan's favorite thing to do, be ironic and confuse you.

Steely Dan – The Boston Rag Lyrics 14 years ago
I always got this image of Lonnie being the narrator's toddler son, the narrator is always strung out and the wife being on the phone, "too busy" or never around in general. The narrator and his girlfriend, wife, whatever might be a poor couple who never get along or are never together or just have a bad homelife, lifestyle, etc, i dunno. "The Boston Rag" I feel is the narrators way of showing the listener that he is nostalgic for better times, "I was singing this song when Lonnie came alive" might be his way of saying life, for him, has sucked even before their son Lonnie was born. "Lady bayside" seemed to me like she was flirting around with other guys and he couldnt do anything about it. I thought it goes "Lonnie was the king THEN / back in 1965" but it doesnt matter much... "So i pointed my car down 7th ave" sounds to me like the narrator left the girl and maybe took their son, and as a druggy, he didnt pay enough attention to him and Lonnie got into the drug stash ("swept the playroom") and was comatose for 48 hours.
