I'm totally with street spirit on that. I think that the song begins with what seems like sexual excitement and extreme desire for that girl, and little by little, the bitterness takes more and more place...And the song becomes, by the end, a painful and dark confession that looks like revenge and a sense of extreme frustration. GReat, great song. Well said, street spirit.(sorry, my english is so-so... i'm a french speaker from montreal and i speak english for less than 2 years, so sorry) |

i think Wambs right. The character in this song can't trust the person he love, but is still in love with her. he just cannot know what's real and what's fake and feel like their whole story is a big scam. Maybe he regret the time and heart he put in this relationship built on a lie. The song feels like a bid deception about a person who plays a game socially and make people believe she's someone she's not, and the character, knowing the truth, see that even when you think you know someone, maybe you don't know the real person behind all the "fakeness". And that's a sad thing. And although this song make me a bit sad, i feel blown away everytime. But, maybe it's juste cuz i associate it with my life : i've been 2 years with a guy who had already a girlfriend for 3 years when i met him.I didn't know it so i fell in love, and stayed with him 2 years before finding the truth and discover he just got engaged with the other girl, so he said to me that we had to call it quit. He had mastered a way to have a complete double life and i was just fun to fuck before he decide to settle down. In 2 years, i don't know what was true, but i know that people can be whoever they want just to get something for you. That's my thing about this song : my ass is kicked. |

Yeah : i too think that they're the 2 best songs on the album. But i really looove this album entirely, it's a really great ensemble of emotions, intelligence, and authenticity, which i think it's rare these modern days in the music business. For me, it's one of the most underestimated band of the 90's. Just like Pavement, they passed under the radar while everybody was watching Kurt Cobain destroy himself. I don't know why it seems like people considered James like a guilty pleasure, ( or that.s the idea i got from people around me when i listen to the album). Like there no real musical or melodic quality about them, like you have to be ashamed to listen to them, cuz it's not cool enough for the masses. sometimes, it kills me when people didnt listen more than one song ( Laid) and say things like " ah yeah, it's the catchy song in american pie...I thought it was played by Better than Ezra"... True story. What the fuck with your ears, stupid people ?? Anyway, Just wanted to speak out to a crowd i felt would understand. (p.s : sorry if my english is so-so...I'm a french speaker from Montreal, Canada and my english is, well, incapacitated in many ways!!) |
