Deptford Goth – Feel Real Lyrics 11 years ago
Thanks for this. That's pretty much how I see it, just wanted to expand on some things.

In the line "feel real, now", I see it as him talking about feeling alive.

"Now you've got to breathe"
"When you can't take it, don't swallow your pain"
"Hold yourself, howl and scream"

In these lyrics he talks about being present in your emotions and feeling the full weight of it. The pain makes him "feel real", "now" in this moment. Breathing is also something you do subconsciously, and in telling himself "you've got to breathe", he is putting himself in conscious control of his body.

"Forever meant nothing when we had nothing."

This obviously speaks of a meaningless eternity. I feel like he led an empty existence before they found each other. In the line "I want to dance like her, like nobody's watching, but nobody's watching", I think it's telling of how he needs someone to care, though he wishes he didn't.

"Finally feel everything joining underneath."
An alternate interpretation that came to mind was it being a hark back to the line "it's only where your feet fell". I think that was a metaphor for their relationship. He took a leap of faith and wherever he lands is out of his control. Though he might've landed on rocky ground, it is now coming together beneath him.

Falling in love can wake you up, so to speak. The pain of losing that can do the same. It makes him feel human. I think that's what the song is about.
