Kings of Convenience – Winning a Battle, Losing the War Lyrics 15 years ago
Personally, I think the female character is somebody with Alzheimer's or something the like. She is in a nursing home (hence "the world is soft around her") and technically not the responsibility of the main character, but she still means enough to him to go visit and care for her (she may be his mother, for instance).
It also explains the last line: "the day breaks and everything is new", which is literally the case for people with severe Alzheimer's disease.

Regina Spektor – Dance Anthem of the 80's Lyrics 16 years ago
My friend and I were discussing this song and we think the interpretation of this song starts with the title itself. It isn't called 'Dance anthem of the 80s' for nothing. The 80s were kind of a period of decadence I believe where casual sex was kind of the 'in-thing' to do (I was born in the 80s so I don't really know for sure, but I know Brett Easton Ellis' novels are situated in the 80s and they are mostly about this kind of stuff).

So the song is about that lifestyle of decadence and casual/meaningless sex. On the surface this is fun and exciting having sex with a random stranger you pick up at a party or something (you are so sweet, dancing to that beat). This would be the first part of the song before the solo. Picking out some hot guy/girl and getting it on with him/her.

That this isn't the greatest lifestyle already filters through in the first part. She refers to a meat market, which such a scene could be compared to. Also the seeing 'each other eat' line indicates that it is only about 'consuming' someone else, nothing more. And they all really want to 'watch each other sleep' something which indicates a more substantial and deeper relationship. So, instead of the fleeting sex they want deep down a more meaningful connection.

After the solo this becomes even more apparent as the main character is walking alone on the street like a drunk, but not. The cars not stopping has a strong connotation with prostitution, but can also be interpreted as the main character saying that he/she is a normal person and just wants someone to stop and take care of him/her and get some genuine affection.

Finally, the verse with 'it's been a long time since before I've been touched' alludes to that the act of sex is nothing more than a routine and that it is more a matter of with whom it is and when it happens than whether if it happens. This indicates that all the affection and specialness of having sex is long gone. The addiction and repetition at the end indicates even more the routine that is established and maybe a sort 'it's better than nothing, I'm damaged goods anyway' attitude that the main character may have.

Long post, sorry for that. Love the song and love how Regina makes a seemingly happy song and puts in such a deep and dark meaning (at least as far as we are interpreting it).

Regina Spektor – Eet Lyrics 16 years ago
Just to add to the discussion whether Regina is selling out. Personally I sure as hell don't think so. I think she creates elaborate compositions in her head and I remember her saying in a recording of All the rowboats that she hears so much more in her head. She now has the means to actually realize what she hears in her head. This will mean that songs will become more produced. Is this a bad thing? I don't think so.

Also as other people pointed out, she will grow as an artist and as a human being. This means that her style of music is subject to change. Should she keep hitting a chair with a drumstick because her fans who like that want her to? I would say no. She should do what she wants with her music. It is her music after all, right? If you don't like what she is doing now, well that's too bad. But I am pretty sure that this is what she wants to be making.

Finally, I have to say I absolutely LOVE Regina. Her music is fantastic and I personally love almost anything she puts out there. Her lyrics are so profound even though they seem so simple and in almost every single song that she has written there is a line which I think is utterly gorgeous in its simplicity. And discovering a potential meaning in a seemingly simple song like the one I typed up above fills me with even more appreciation for her talent. My friend and I saw her perform a few days ago and she blew us away. She is truly gifted and I will be a fan of hers for a long long time.

Regina Spektor – Eet Lyrics 16 years ago
I've been discussing Regina lyrics with a friend of mine (hiya, you'll be reading this, I know ;) ) and we had a great discussion about Eet (amongst other songs) and we thought of an interesting interpretation.

The song tells about forgetting the lyrics to your favorite song. This can be seen as a metaphor about losing the joy in life or not fulfilling the dreams you had when you were younger (being dissapointed in general). You try to recapture the joy and keep moving forward (you try to feel the beat, you try to move your feet) but it's difficult, because life is treating you not the way you want it to.

The second verse is about trying to conform and live life trying push away the doubts you're having (in this case with the music/headphones)

The third verse is a bit of a stretch due to change from 'you' to 'he', but we were thinking it may have something to do with suicide. 'Someone's deciding whether or not to steal' would refer to stealing your own life, ending it because the main character is not satisfied with it. A bit literal interpretation of the opening the window would be jumping (since he wants to steal, but he opens a window to the outside, rather than to go inside). We were not sure how to interpret the small boy crying, but here goes: we think the small boy is a metaphor for the main character and the brother is a metaphor for life. The small boy cries because it's not his turn (he isn't living life the way he wants it) and life won't let him (he thinks).

Okay long post. Final words: eet itself is just a sound, it doesn't mean anything. It sort of plays off of the idea of recovering your favourite song by using a simple rhytm and nonsense words.
Alright that's it.
