This is just how I like to look at the song but maybe it's a combination of all these great idea. If we mix the Grapes of Wrath and the Jesus interpretations and put it in a modern day setting I think we get Dust Bowl Dance. Let me try and justify I feel that Marcus is singing for two people. For the majority I think he is singing for us. I think the message of this song is (or at least should be) universal. and the other person the "young man" is Christ. So the beginning is a portrayal of Christ's time on earth. He was separated from the Father - "the father was gone" by the end of his life his circle of friends grew to be only 12 and even then one betrays him. so he's alone - "there was no one in the town and no one in the field" I think the "barren land" is his teaching of the people. He taught them all they could learn and i was time for him to go. but not before paying the price for our sins. He suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane and then suffered on the Cross. Next we turn to us. We have hard time in our lives. by age sixteen we feel the world is out to get us. "And i have no idea where else my heart could have been" is a fantastic line. because i think its referring to once we put our trust on christ on our savior its impossible it think that it could be anywhere else. And we've "placed all our trust at the foot of this hill" the hill could be found in the city of Calvary, the hill could be where christ was placed on a cross. "my heart can never be still" if you believe in Christ you know you have no moderate feelings for him your heart rejoices for what he has done for us. "seal my heart and break my pride/align my heart my body my mind" could be nothing but a pray to seal us to christ. "I've nowhere to stand and now nowhere to hide/face what I've done and do my time" I feel we all (if we have a conscience) feel this way from time to time. we are sinners. Satan is smart and he brings us down and because of him we do wrongly and have to pay for our actions. the whole next stanza with "well you are my accuser..." Even though we repent and pay our sins to god its satan who accuses us of being evil. he makes us believe we are no good just so we will sin more. so the accuser is satan and temptation and the remorse felt by committing sin. Then in the next stanza with "there will come a day..." we are standing side by side with Christ and with him we say these words. and its christ who will go out back and get his gun because he, as we said, is "the only son" Even though we are guilty of committing sin if we put our trust at the foot of his hill, if we put our faith in him and repent of our sins he will find the ones seeking to bring us down and he will defeat them. He will pay our debt because he loves us. So im not saying this is what Marcus wanted to try and convince us of. I do believe that Marcus believes in God (i feel several of his songs refer to God and to christ and their greatness and grace). But just because these arn't the reasons he wrote this song doesn't me these can't be the reason we love this song. To me this song is about the Atonement of Christ plain and simple. |

ok Burtyc, lets stop being so hypocritical. You say not to call them indie then say the are independent from any other genre. i agree with both they are folk (not rock) and that they fit into no other category. so lets just agree on Indie Folk. just chill out. "we are friends" |

There are many good interpretations of the song on here and iv made mine by taking parts of all of yours. Its obviously him looking back on a memory. The memory is of him and his brother (his brother is also his best friend) when they were much younger. There wasnt much of an incident only what is said in the song, his best friend(brother) is bit on the shoulder, which is a big deal for a young child. and he "teased him" they laughed together. and when it say "touching his back with my arm i kiss him" i think he means he kisses him with his hand. as a touch of comfort to have to same impact as a mothers kiss. and they were in love with each other as young children can be in love with a stranger and they can love them unconditionally one day then not the next. near the end of the song is him remembering how they grew up and grew apart but even though he left and they had their differences, lying there in his bed he still loved and missed his brother. this song is beautiful and has many meanings changing for everyone who hears it. thats what makes sufjan so amazing he dosnt tell you what to feel but he lets you feel it all. |
