Even though it is hard to pick, this is my favorite Nine Inch Nails song. It really shows off how good of an expressionist Trent is. To me, the surface of this song is about slipping away into a state devoid of emotion, hence the mechanical references. But like most of his songs, they can be taken in so many different ways. Overall this song is very depressing, wrote by a very depressed person. But it does make since when looked at with the rest of The Downward Spiral as a whole. This song to me represents the breaking point, when the narrator just shuts everything out. It becomes the last "sane", (and I use that term loosely) thing the narrator writes, before completely letting go and letting all the bad thoughts surround him. I have went through a so called "downward spiral" and I know just what that feeling of just giving up is. The title is simplified as he is "becoming" just like the rest of the people around him, completely desensitized. |
