Regina Spektor – Man of a Thousand Faces Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm positive the sugar cube is an LSD reference, as well as his ascension to where to religion has found a path or a likeness [because of the LSD].

Regina Spektor – Laughing With Lyrics 16 years ago
She herself doesn't have a solid view on God, actually, and believes religion does both good & bad. Check out some interviews. :)

I think this song is beautiful satire regarding the idea that at any given moment, if a person whom is experiencing a traumatic moment, he or she may ask or feel "God, why me?" and not even have to believe in any god at all; and yet, when things are working fine or one is better off, the idea of a being controlling all our fates may become a humorous reflection, especially with institutions promising you something no one can ever guarantee, all in exchange for your time and money.

In the end, though, we should all be laughing at our helplessness, whether we believe or not. I think that's the real message here.

(I dont believe, just for the record. :D)
