Green Day – Restless Heart Syndrome Lyrics 14 years ago
I noticed alot of people are talking about how Gloria and Christian are "friends" or "lovers", but according to a somewhat recent interview with the band, the story is not a love story at all. In fact, Gloria is the protagonist of the story and is just trying to get through her life without being changed from a Punk Rock chick to whatever this century is trying to make people. She is holding on to her ideas and although she does believe in the corruption of the government and the conspiracies, instead of just bitching about it, she is doing something about it. Christian is the antagonist of the story. He is being changed quickly. He learns of the problems of our society, but just becomes angry at everyone an everything. The two characters are foils and are enemies. Gloria is the "Last of the American Girls" because of how she is willing to stand up for her ideals. Christian is the "Enemy" because he is the "Silence" of the generation, as mentioned in the song "Know Your Enemy".

This song is a response to "¿Viva la Gloria? (Little Girl)" because Christian just got done bringing Gloria down and now all she knows seems to be wrong. Her life has been temporarily turned upside down. She reaches a sort of depression state and turns to prescription drugs to change that, which, in turn, makes her feel like a hypocrite, making her stop and, later on in "21 Guns", get back at Christian by not listening to him.

After his depression in "Murder City", Christian tries again to retaliate against Gloria, like in "Peacemaker". He tries to change Gloria, as to lower her to his level by telling her that her efforts are useless and will only lead to bad things. The reason the question marks are added to the title is because Gloria isn't feeling so sure she will help or make a difference anymore.

This song in particular is the foil to "Last of the American Girls" because Gloria just got done being praised for her good deeds and strong voice, and Christian is being dogged for not voicing his opinion. His friend is standing outside, not feeling sorry for him because it is all Christian's fault for not doing anything. He is "Desperate" for a voice but can't find one. He can take care of himself, but nobody else.

This song is actually about the revenge Christian wants to bring upon Gloria for ignoring him for not sticking up for himself and just getting pissed, but not actually doing anything.

According to a somewhat recent interview with the band, Christian is the "Silence" of the generation, as mentioned in the song "Know Your Enemy", and this song is about what Christian wants to say, while Gloria is actually out saying it. The two are actually enemies, not lover's, because of their differences in their ideals.

According to Billie Joe, the only reason this song was put after "Christian's Inferno", is because they wanted to level out the anger from before to make "East Jesus Nowhere" just that much more powerful. This song is technically not even a part of the story. It is from Billie Joe to his wife, Adrienne.

Even though he becomes angry, he just lets things boil up and doesn't take action.
