So to me this song is about losing someone close to you and feeling alone in the world but at the same time, being too hard on yourself and not giving yourself a break in the aftermath. "I waited 'til the night was over Cursed the sun for coming up all over Cashed the checks I had, I didn't own Standing on the corner, God I wonder when I'll give myself a break (hey)" This part really struck me. It was such a surreal experience crashing life insurance checks after my mom died. None of this stuff belonged to me. You feel like there's no time to give yourself a break, between planning a funeral, the estate, etc. You don't even get a chance to really grieve until the end. |
